Is it true?

When we give birth, we spend the first two years teaching our children how to walk and talk, and the next sixteen years telling them to sit down and shut up! What do you think?

I do not agree with you, children should be encouraged to do and say right things, never say shutup to them become a great listner and your children will consider you to be the best parents.

I think that there's a little cynicism in there. It's not necessarily "shut up" (although there might be alot of that when they're teenagers!) but rather jokingly laughing at how many times we're going to be saying "Shhhh!", "Be good and be quiet", and ALSO..."Mommy, mommy, mommy" - "Honey, mommy is talking right now and it's not polite to interrupt." Aloha!!

Well,.... actually.... you can encourage your children to do and say the right things, but what happens when they become teenagers, become mouthy, and swear at you? Or better yet, scream at you??

Yes, that is totally true, lol. I was thinking about that earlier this year as I was trying to get my baby to talk. I was wondering why in the world I would want her to talk when all day I am telling my other 3 kids to be quiet. I actually came up with some funny ideas for a comic strip about those kind of things. But I can't draw. They look really funny in my head, though.

I wish I knew someone that could draw. I'll have to wait until my daughter gets older. She loves to draw and is pretty good for a 6 year old. Maybe in a few years...

LOL! so true. that's why we need to appreciate the stage when our children run after and cry when we leave, coz time comes when we're the ones running after them to squeeze us in their so hectic sched, and cry when they leave to live a life of their own.

Definitely not. Yes we teach them to walk and talk although these things come naturally to most children. When my children were teenagers, I always like to listen to their discussions and opinions and would never tell them to shut up. If they were having an argument with each other, I would ask them to behave in a civilised manner. I do not like the phrase 'shut up'.

What would you do if they did not behave in a civilized manner?

it might be right but one thing is obvious we should teach our children first how to talk and walk but not to do any chance to fight in front of them...when they look towards us...they learn how to defend their own point of view either its right or wrong.....and teach them truly how to behave with elders.....Thanks.

That's right... I've noticed that many kids today do not behave with elders... they disrespect them. Thank you.

I think it all depends on each person's perception. I think at some point you're going to feel that way.

Oh, that is so funny! Haven't heard that one yet, but I'm still hoping to have the chance to find out for myself! That must happen just before "we spend the 1st half of our lives trying to get out into the world, then spend the other half trying to get back to where we were."

Yup, I believe that it's true. My daughter (16) and I just had a shouting match. In the end it was great, though. We ended up hugging and telling each other how much we love the other. =)

hehe......I don't have kids yet. I don't konw whether it is right or wrong. But from my life experience, I think raising a kids is more than that, and how to educate your own children well is definitely a science.
