While talking about Van Johnson another actor came to my mind. Gig Young was almost always a supporting actor. He had very few lead movie roles. I've seen one or two movies where he played the lead and they were B movies. He was a great side man who could get laughs but I don't believe he had the stability to play a lead role. Gig was a raging alcoholic who was once married to Elizabeth Montgomery of "Bewitched" fame. I loved the movies I did see Gig Young in. He was a handsome man who probably could have been an amazing career had he not been glued to a bottle and clearly dealing with some demons. I don't know a lot about his life outside of the movies except for a few details and how it all ended. Gig Young was known for his instability due to his drinking but I'm pretty sure not many people expected him to kill his last wife before killing himself. I was shocked when I read that's how he died. Even in most of his movies, you can tell he seems drunk but that still shocked me. My favorite movie with Gig Young was "That Touch of Mink" with Cary Grant and Doris Day. Gig seemed to do slapstick comedy well and I laughed so hard watching his antics throughout that entire movie. He had the looks and ability to be a big name actor but due to his instability, it's clear as to why that never happened for him. It's sad when you see people with potential but they waste it. I don't know what lead to Gig Drinking his life away but whatever it was it really ruined his career.
