And who doesn’t! The “dingy redhead” is an American institution, so much so that people who were born long after she died in 1989 still know who she was and have probably laughed along with an episode (or 50) of the iconic television series I Love Lucy. Lucille Ball was born in Jamestown, New York, and that’s where the Lucy-Desi Museum is located. It pays homage to the careers (married and apart) of Lucille Ball and her first husband, the great Desi Arnaz. The museum is split into two parts. One covers the career of Ball, from her beginnings in Jamestown as an aspiring performer with a love of Vaudeville to her days as a “Chesterfield Girl” hawking cigarettes to her 70-plus movie roles, and Arnaz, a Cuban-born aristocrat who had to flee with his mother during the revolution in the 1930s. His father, a prominent politician, was arrested shortly before Desi and his mother made their escape to America. Their careers (Arnaz was indeed a musician and bandleader who popularized Latin music and the conga line method of dancing to it) crossed during production of a movie, and they married in 1940. One thing the museum is excellent at doing is showing the innovations that Lucy and Desi brought to television. I Love Lucy invented the “three-camera” method of filming a show, and it was also taped in front of a live audience (things that are common today). Since they butted heads with production executives so often they formed their own production company, Desilu. In addition to I Love Lucy that company gave us other classics like The Andy Griffith Show, Gomer Pyle USMC, and Star Trek. Although they divorced in 1960, Lucy and Desi remained friends. One of the informational panels says that she called him on November 30, 1986, which would have been their anniversary. That was two days before Arnaz died of lung cancer. All of this and more is in the “history of Lucy and Desi” area. Part two is devoted solely to I Love Lucy. It includes recreations of the production sets showing their living room and kitchen, costumes, and the six Emmy awards that Ball won: five in her lifetime and the posthumous Governor’s Award, given five months after her death in 1989. It was a wonderful stop for fans of Lucy, Desi, or comedy in general. PHOTO COLLAGE: *Emmy Award for I Love Lucy *A photo of co-star and friend Vivian Vance…bet you didn’t know she was that beautiful when she was younger! *The Ricardos’ living room re-creation *The Jamestown NY city limits sign. (I told my brother I hope everyone who sees that knows that “10,000 Maniacs” is the name of an 80s band! )

It was well worth the trip! And I’m not one of those who can quote every line from every episode!

Yeah, "10,000 Maniacs" could just as well refer to some ot the population... I did know that Vivian was a beauty and that she baulked at being dressed as a frump in the show. She got her way and was allowed to dress as stylishly as Lucy.

@FourWalls Did you know that she was in a Marx Brothers movie (Room Service)?

They should maybe put some musical notes on that portion of the sign so people won’t think the southern New York Asylum is there. I like seeing photos of people who I only knew when they were older. The very young photos of Lucy are amazing, too. (She started I Love Lucy when she was 40!)

I saw a good movie recently with Ball and Vincent Price. Can't recall the name of it. I heard some way that the reruns of her shows have been on tv longer than any other.

I think I read that, since the advent of cable, those reruns haven’t been off the air. That’s amazing. And, of course, they were daytime reruns on local channels before cable.

Very interesting post. "I Love Lucy" was one of the first shows on the Italian TV in the early 60s (Italian title "Lucy e Io") I also remember The Andy Griffith Show, that one came a lot later, I have watched it when we lived in the south of France.

Did they leave her famous whine in English or did some poor soul have to try to translate that into Italian? And what did they do when Desi was “cussing her out” in Spanish (when he’d get frustrated at her and start speaking Spanish)?

@FourWalls Everything that was transmitted in Italy was in Italian. When there are "cussing" in other languages usually there are subtitles with a translation. Often when I watch American Mafia movies the director pretend to make the Maria guys speak Sicilian. Well they should hire Sicilian people, you have so many in America, at least it would sound real.

I am a huge fan of Lucille Ball, and loved watching reruns of I Love Lucy when I was growing up. She was so hilarious in her "dingbat" persona on the show, you couldn't help but fall in love with her. And I love that offset she was a savvy business woman in and era where men dominated every aspect of the workforce. She was definitely a force to be reckoned with!

The “dingy” ones were usually the most intelligent.

She was indeed, and to see the way she and Desi persevered from difficulties in childhood to become titans (first Latino and first woman to head a production studio…in the 50s!!!!!!!) is truly amazing.

Sounds like an interesting museum to see, I love the collage. I Love Lucy was always there to get me through boring days and through illnesses when I had to lie in bed and Lucy helped a lot,

I never saw Vivian Vance that young and beautiful as depicted in the photo. Then again, there were photos of Lucy in the early days where they had her hair either dyed blonde or had a blonde wig on her.

What an interesting post. As usual, I enjoyed reading all the backstory. I wonder what people think of the 10,000 Maniacs' sign. Is it a well-known band? I wouldn't have thought so.

No, they aren’t that well-known. I mean, I know their stuff but I was into college rock when they came along.

It’s every enjoyable for fans of Lucy or fans of early TV. There’s a comedy museum nearby as well, but I didn’t go to that one.
