Tomorrow we’ll continue with a similar theme, looking at the infamous “Clear Channel Memorandum” and songs that showed up on that. But today we close out the list of my favorite tunes that ran afoul of “authoritarian” figures. Let’s close out on a high note! #1: A Whiter Shade of Pale - Procol Harum Your friends and mine, the Illinois Crime Commission, are back for another one of their songs that they said shouldn’t be played because it was “obviously about drugs.” Yeah, and that band name, right, fellas? Or, as the quote from lyricist Keith Reid says, “It was influenced by books, not by drugs.” There’s a very literary quality to the lyrics of this marvelous tune (“her face, at first just ghostly, turned a whiter shade of pale;” “the room was humming harder as the ceiling blew away”), but I guess the older generation didn’t think these young, long-haired rockers could read. I have my doubts about the people who were doing the banning, to tell you the truth. What a song. Thanks for reading. A Whiter Shade of Pale Written by Keith Reid, Gary Brooker, and Matthew Fisher Recorded by Procol Harum Released as a single, 1967 Reason banned: perceived drug references We skipped a light fandango:

I’m here, silly. West Virginia mountain mama (had to call my sis-in-law, who’s a big John Denver fan, and ask if she wanted one of those t-shirts). Heading home. Love this song, too. It’s on my 100 favorites list.

I’m not sure. I listened to the song, but I’m probably going to go with no. I missed a lot being born in 1981.

@FourWalls But when you're addicted to country, what's a girl to do?

Oh, yeah, really got into this one even though the words didn't stick long enough in my brain to know what was sung... if ya know what I mean.

I think the music is so beautiful you can ignore the lyrics.

I wonder what qualificatiions were needed to be a censor. Not too many I'm thinking.

Some of these reasons make me think that the top qualification is a single-digit IQ.

@NJChicaa — WHAT???? Annie Lennox???? I’m gonna come beat you up for that!!!!! Seriously, her voice in that rendition is amazing. I’m not as fond of the music in her version as I am in the original, which to me would still be a great song if it were an instrumental.

I always thought this song was about grief and lost innocence on both a personal and a societal level.
