Dress code violation. A silly moment at work.

I stumbled on this old photo the other day, and decided to put it on my desktop and write a short post about it. As some of you know, I have kvetched a bit in the past about the lack of integrity I've seen at some of the places I've worked. I have seen, in various places, each of the following: embezzlement, stealing of donations, child care workers high on cocaine, racial discrimination, unsafe environments, etc. The two places with the MOST professionalism I've worked at were Diablo Valley College and STAND. At stand, I was a mentor to young kids (seven through 14), took them out hiking, bowling, to ride my horse, etc. We received regular trainings there, about things Like Mandated Reporter Law, Cultural Sensitivity, and even basic stuff like Professionalism. In this photo, my "small group" was charged with demonstrating a "dress code violation" at work. I did the obvious thing and "sagged me pants," a common thing among male teenagers over the past couple of decades here. As you can see, we didn't take ourselves TOO seriously there, even though the work was difficult and sometimes stressful. Have you had jobs where the overall ambiance was more or less "professional"?

I recall when the younger employees would be on their cell phones using ear plug thingys then not paying attention to what they were doing, my boss never said a word to them even though it was against policy to be on cell phones, she didn't want to offend them as they were all hispanic.

Odd. How is being Hispanic tied in with cell phone use?

It's that almost everyone I worked with was hispanic and my boss was jewish and afraid to offend them.

@rebelann Was he afraid he'd get sued? Or was he just a bit too "sensitive" to minority rights?

Your pants look gross. I'm sure you won't mind me saying that. I had to laugh.

My job at the children’s mental health hospital was very professional, as was my college library. Not anywhere else though. I hate the sagging pants trend. I still see it on occasion. I remember being in class one day, one boy pantsed another because the other kid’s pants were so baggy. Luckily, that poor kid was wearing very long shorts beneath them.

@TheHorse I’d say the units age groups were from 8 to 18.

@AmbiePam I don't think I'd pants an 18-year-old.

Glad it was for a demonstration. . Semi professional working the floor in retail. They have things you are not supposed to do or wear.

Yep. Makes sense. I'm lucky I don't have to wear fancy shoes at Guitar Center, as I don't think I have any fancy shoes.

When I worked for marine insurance companies in Manhattan NYC we had to be nicely dressed and have a new outfit every day. I had a work wardrobe where I wore different outfits for a week switching them off with other outfits and then two weeks later wore the outfits from the previous weeks. Otherwise, I could not afford the clothes and we won't even mention the money I spent on things like pantyhose etc.

I don't think I could have stood a job where I had to wear a different suit every day.

Love the picture. I worked at the Corporate Headquarters for a conglomerate. They had carpeted halls, antique furniture, etc. You were afraid to speak too loudly. I didn't stay there long. Enjoy your day.

Oh my gah this photo is hysterical! Product placement for Under Armour . I've never worked for a stuffy corporate company - I'd say the places I was at were more or less casual professional. The people working with the public were expected to be professional (meaning me, since I was more or less my own department), but I can't say that about everyone around me .
