Sweet Sweet Honey

A Bee Keeper has hives very close to our house. The bees love our yard it seems. Though they have wide open fields all around. We don't have many flowers. Often, this bird feeder is full of bees. We have to fill it twice a day; they drink it down. Our bushes are full of bees, there is a steady hum all over our property. Kind of interesting. If I ever see him when he's out tending to the bees, I'll have some questions. The bee keeper gave us a container of honey. That is nice.

I don't know a LOT about honey bees but do know that if they can't find flowers, they search for honeydew from different bugs like aphids that drink from the bushes and leave honeydew behind... I'm sure your bushes are filled with bugs that can supply honeydew.

@paigea It sounded kinda gross to me when I first heard it but the bees "sterilize" the honeydew before using it.

@DaddyEvil Many things we eat are gross at some point of development. Honey has antibacterial properties, so bees must sterilize it.

Those little insects drink more than we can imagine. It was nice from the bee keeper to offer you the honey.

@paigea With the heat it is incredible how much the water evaporates. I have to refill our pond every evening and I add 200 litres of water every day.

It surprise me at first how quickly the water went down. It was covered in bees though.

I'm sure your local honey is great. The tastiest honey I've had recently was last year in Manitoba. Delicious.

Our birdbath was often full of bees. I don't know of any hives that were nearby. We should have called it a bee-bath.

@paigea In our summers, the birds were battling to get a look-in.

Yes, it certainly has become a bee bath or fountain. Today they weren't as busy here. Sometimes it is just covered.

It's interesting to have them. They love the bird bath and the outdoor sink. They don't go near the rain barrels.

We seem to always have plenty of bees/wasps. These hives made a noticeable difference.

I hope they can contain them. I'm scared of bees and getting stung!

They don't contain them. The bees go where they want. These bees don't bother us at all. I've grabbed one a couple times by accident because they were on something I picked up. Then they stung me. But it's not really a big deal.
