Will my injured sunflower survive? I'm taking bets.

I have two sunflowers that are as tall as my balcony railing. But the one in the foreground was injured as I wove it through my lattice work. It was all but broken in several places. Still, it appears to be reaching puberty, and I am hoping it will throw a flower. The one in the background is doing fine. I watered all of my plants with a bit of Miracle Gro Quick Start in the water this morning. That stuff seems to work for me. What is your bet?

We can't see the picture so my bet is you're hiding the poor plant until you see if it will survive. Sunflowers are sturdy plants and don't die easily. It will probably survive and give you a flower.

@TheHorse I used to weave vines through a fishline lattice I put up on the porch at the other house. Vines are a lot easier to weave than something with a wooden stem. Good luck to you both.

You have given them Miracle Gro and now you can just hope for the best. I once grew a sunflower by my garden fence in Latvia and it grew way over my head.

We had some big ones in Oakland. There was some real soil there between the buildings that nobody had planted in. But here I am dealing with small planters. My princess friend is standing next to some healthy corn plants.

@AmbiePam I just don't have enough soil here to generate thick stems and 12-foot sunflowers.

I hope it's okay. I used to use Miracle-Gro Fish Emulsion but can no longer find it anywhere.

My sister planted a couple of those and they always start great but when they become big boys or girls they always start to have problems here. That sun is no joke, even to hot for a plant called sunflower. I have been telling her to move those plants close to other plants in certain areas of the yard, mostly weeds but those plants survive there and kind of protect each other. Move it to the big pine tree and the shade will take some the stress off it. She is like nah, this closer to the house, I can get to them easy.

@TheHorse Maybe, we have never tried that to be honest. Always told never over water them but might need it if its so brutal out.

@crossbones27 In my experience sunflowers are not shy about expressing their feelings. When dehydrated they get really droopy looking.

If the stem was not broken it will survive.

@TheHorse - The wind damaged a tomato plant last year. It was bent, not broken, I took a stick of wood and I "taped" the wood so that the stem was straight again. The plant survived and gave tomatoes.

I would describe it as "partially broken." But not severed. I remember words like xylem and phloem from my high school biology class. I wonder how well they survive when the outside of the stem is bent'broken. I reckon this sunflower is an "experiment."

Thanks. You too. As of today, it looks like it might survive. I see a flower forming in the center.

I'm rooting for the injured flower to make a full, flowering recovery.

I’ve never grown sunflowers in pots. I used to grow a row in my vegetable garden. They were much taller than I am.
