Oh, Shenandoah….

One of the places I’d either never been to or was too young to remember going to was scratched off the list on my recent vacation. That was Shenandoah National Park.
Skyline Drive is perfect for someone with an aching back: 106 miles or so of 35 MPH driving, with tons of scenic overviews.
In the top photo you see something that, in the distance, looks like a lake. It’s not. The signage said that it’s actually known as a “rock river” (or a rock lake). It’s a bald spot in the vegetation, caused by rocks. That was fascinating!
On the bottom there’s deer. There’s one up the hill, and three by the side of the road. With a slow speed limit they are in less danger than they would be on a 70-MPH interstate.
The views were amazing. And you come out of Shenandoah, going north to south, and you find yourself on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
More about that later.

It’s an amazing beauty. When I went to Badlands a couple of years ago I was struck by the amazing beauty there….completely different from what we have here. That’s why I travel!

They did. I love the Browns’ version as well. I’m a sucker for harmony.

My primary wildlife on the trip. Love deer. I was at Mammoth Cave’s welcome center late in the afternoon one day and there were more deer than people!

@FourWalls That's really cool. When we went out to the west coast it was a wildlife extravaganza.

They weren’t too concerned about me stopping the car to take their pictures.

Oh I tell you this place is Gods country.
I remember just catching a glimpse of it on the Blue Ridge Pkwy when riding the big rigs.
Breathtaking and a sight I will never forget the mist over the mountains.

The mountains are another thing that someone might say “seen one, seen ‘em all.” Oh no. That view made my trips home when I was stationed in Norfolk so amazing!!

Shenandoah beautiful country and the name of a terrific movie in 1965 called Shenandoah starring James Stewart, with Doug McClure, Patrick Wayne and Katherine Ross in her screen debut.
Dealt with the Civil War and how a family who tried to stay out of it got their family dragged into by both North and South.
The American folk song "Oh Shenandoah" features prominently in the film's soundtrack.
