Heavy rain today while we were out

I just told you about the delicious fried chicken sandwich I had today. It was supposed to rain today, but my daughter apparently thought it was unlikely since there was only a 40% chance. She was wrong. It was raining steadily when we got done eating. Because she can't get her cast wet, she waited in the pickup area and I went to the car to pick her up. By the time we got back to town (about 4 miles later), it was raining so heavily that the roads were flooding. As we got to the center of town, we could see the manhole cover in the center of the main intersection was lifted up from the water pouring out. We went down to the street behind us (all one way in alternating directions) and drove to the end and the manhole cover there was also lifted up and water was pouring out. We have a flooding situation in that area from the street we were on and south for two blocks. We live one block north of that intersection. Higher elevation, so no flooding. But, lots of water running down the gutters. I parked close to the sidewalk for her, but went in to get a plastic bag so she could cover her cast to come in. We were both wet, but at least the thunderstorm part of it didn't seem to be happening over us. But, it took a bunch of small branches off the trees on the way into town, so there was definitely wind.

She explained that it only means that only 40% of the region can expect rain at 100%, so she figured we were in the 60% that would be rain free. Uh huh. A extreme thunderstorm warning had been issued, so I figured it was coming, regardless of where it was. They do miss us often, either going north of us or south, but no storm can be ruled out when a warning has been issued. Weather does what it wants and weather forecasters are only as good as the air movements continuing on the exact paths they're looking at.

Been two weeks that we are free of rain and flood. And now it's there in your place.

Our flooding is usually in low areas near tidal waters. It's rare we have flooding by itself without the tides making it worse. But there are some areas that have had bad flooding because the ground gets oversaturated and dirt dams in farm areas away from ride waters have given way and caused a lot of damage. Rarely deaths, though.

@jerzgirl We are an archipelago that is located in the ring of fire where calamities like typhoon, earthquake, tsunami, volcanic eruption, etc is a common thing.

@toniganzon That would frighten me terribly. You must be very strong to deal with that regularly.

I know how it feels to deal with thunderstorms in my neighborhood since the roads in my area tend to flood a little bit.

@jerzgirl Winds are fun to watch in a movie but when it comes to real life, ugh.
I once got stuck in a wind tail situation with my friend when we were standing in between a few very very tall buildings in downtown. Trust me, all my hair was in front of my eyes and mouth and I was blind lol, and we both were almost flying away if not there was a pole nearby which we grabbed.
I understand what urs might have felt,
