During this monthlong look at songs that ended up on Clear Channel Communication memo of songs that the executives thought were inappropriate to play after 9/11 we’ve had songs you could understand the rationale for, songs that really needed a stretch of the imagination, and things like this. Help me, Rhonda! No, not that song, I just need help understanding the stupidity behind including this one. Walk Like an Egyptian - Bangles SERIOUSLY, Clear Channel???? Gonna go Bubba-in-the-double-wide stereotyping everyone in the Middle East on us??? Oh, brother. (PS: according to Picky Wedia, the BBC also restricted the playing of this song during the Gulf War. Reminds me of that scene in Dog Day Afternoon when Sal, asked what foreign country he wanted to go to, said, “Wyoming.” ) I’ll skip the absurdities and just talk about what a fun song this is. The song was inspired by people trying to keep their balance on a ferry in choppy waters. See, you never know what’ll inspire a songwriter. Later some radio DJ did a parody of this song called “Walk With an Erection.” It irritated the Bangles royally; however, given that they didn’t write the song, there wasn’t anything they could do about it. Ah, those fun 80s. Walk Like an Egyptian Written by Liam Sternberg Recorded by the Bangles From Different Light, 1986 Strike a pose on a Cadillac:

@FourWalls So catchy, right? I am pretty sure I've heard this overhead in stores (a lot of stores seem to be on an 80s kick lately).

This is such a fun song. I remember walking like an Egyptian. I can understand the BBC not playing it during the Gulf War. Egypt was one of our coalition partners and might have found it offensive. Banning it post-9/11 was a knee-jerk reaction, with emphasis on the jerk.

It was a fun song. I thought Steve Martin did the Egyptian thing better with “King Tut” though. I agree with you about the stupidity of the 9/11 reaction.

Great song but I haven't heard the parody. Some parodies are extremely clever - and funny.

The parody was one of those things that an FM DJ recorded and it got airplay, but not released as a single. And those things got popular before the internet! Whodathunkit?

Yes, I've heard and remember this song. Probably because of the parody that was played about it.

Susanna Hoffs has the most incredible eyes in the history of visual organs. That is all I have to say on the subject of The Bangles.

Yup. But seriously, what radio station was even playing this in 2001?

I liked this song and probably in the 1986 could have sung it along with the radio while driving the car down the 405 Freeway in Los Angeles on the way home from work. It was a top 40's song and played quite often on the traffic channel that reported all the accidents that would occur quite regularly.

@FourWalls Yes, I would drive carefully, singing the song, my hairdresser at the time was an Egyptian but he didn't walk like that when he was doing my hair. . .
