Most people pay alot of money for software for which alternatives are available. For example they would pay alot of moeny for graphic software IrfanView is a both free and a high-quality program available on the internet as a download. Many people need a graphic utilty and most of the good ones are expensive. Irfanview's no-frills interface makes itself known at a glance. Unlike Photoshop's many cascading menus, IrfanView's menus are spare and well-chosen. You can import and view images, perform basic image editing, create slide shows, and convert files from one format to another. Other functions are available too.Crop, blur, and sharpen your images. Make modifications in regular mode or, iin zoom mode. in short its a great program for most users. The program supports all major graphics formats, including .bmp, .gif, .jpg, .png, and .tif. and lets you set the compression level when you save. I agree, Irfanview is a great software, i started using it many years ago and i think i will always use it. I also use GIMP sometimes. I try to use only freeware programs on my personal computer.

Well its to the liking of each person. Some people like to use Adobe Photoshop some like Corel and the amount of Graphic Interfacing possible with such software is not possible with the free ones like Irfanview or Picasa. Such free Softwares are helpful if you are just a beginner and dont need to do any heavy effects etc. For People highly into Graphic Designing etc they can never do with Free Softwares.

Microsoft Office (for Word, PowerPoint, etc.) is a rather expensive software package for which a completely free alternative exists - Open Office. A few months ago I needed PowerPoint, and I almost bought the Microsoft Office software, but I would have also needed a Windows XP upgrade. Total for both would have been roughly $200; again, Open Office was free. So far, I have seen few (and minor) issues with the software; I am very pleased and recommend it to anyone.
