Leaving a tip.

I like to leave a tip whenever I eat a meal at a restaurant. It depends on what kind of service I get on how big of a tip I will leave. Normally; I will leave a ten percent tip of what the meal cost. The better service I get; the better tip I will leave.
I went out to eat lunch today. The restaurant was not very full and it took them over an hour to get my meal. I still left them a tip, but not as big as I would have liked.

I know places like Europe don’t tip, but that’s because servers get paid more there than they do here. I leave a 15% tip no matter what, but if it is good service I’ll leave more. My dad always told me if I couldn’t afford to tip then I couldn’t afford to eat out.
Waiting over an hour to get your meal is quite ridiculous when the place isn’t even full.

Yes, in Europe and other places, the servers get a better wage for their work, so people really don't tip. But here, they get a mere pittance, it's just not enough and no one would even do that work without tips.
Keith, not to offend you in any way, maybe it's different where you live? But if anyone here left a 10% tip, it would actually be considered an insult. 15-18% is standard, always. In most restaurants, if you have a party of 6 or more, the tip is automatically added on (they post this in their menu) and it's always 20%.

There's actually a difference, in my opinion, between the UK and the rest of Europe.
The rest of Europe is more like the US with tipping whereas here it;s a bit different.
Also, tip sharing may be different.
I work in a kitchen again now so get a share of card tips but front of house keep all their cash tips.
I may do a discussion on this myself as it's something that really bugs me.

@MarieCoyle As you say, it's different in the US
10% here would be considered absolutely fine...many don't tip at all.
Not exactly sure about the comparative wages but over here everyone is on at least the minimum wage according to their age.
I've never been to the US but from every single thing I've read and heard the customer services is better in the US than the UK and people working in restaurants are way more respected there than here.

Haha, one hour is a bit long indeed. We don't need to tip for meals here, but if I have the opportunity to go to other countries, I will respect the local culture and customs

I have not been out to eat in ages just not enough money to go around. When I used to go out I always made sure I left a tip usually the suggested amount but then meals at restaurants were a lot cheaper.
