Is ignorance bliss?

Have you ever been told that "ignorance is bliss"? That expression can mean that a person does not want to know about something to avoid having to think or take any action about a problem or a warning. However, living that way can also spell disaster as these days, more than ever, we need to know what is going on and what is happening. We need to know the weather as hurricanes and other weather-related events may be coming and we need to take quick action. We see that also with fires and other events, that if we are not aware, can cause us harm and loss of health and life. Warnings and alerts may be given but if we refuse to pay attention and act quickly then a heavy price can be paid. Even more important, we need to be alert and aware of what is happening in the spiritual realm, as Jesus said in Matthew 24:39 (Easy-to-Read Version) 39 They knew nothing about what was happening until the flood came and destroyed them all. β€œIt will be the same when the Son of Man comes. Are we giving any thoughts to those sobering words or is ignorance bliss?

Ignorance is a bliss in many situations but not all the times. One can not afford to be ignorant in situations that need actions or else it would lead to disasters and life threatening disasters. My friend kept ignoring few symptoms and didn't visit doctor in time. Now, it's grown into a life threatening condition.

I agree! Some people could have taken some protective action but have ignored the warnings.

@kanuck1 There are certain things that work best when ignored but not all the things.

@arunima25 So true! What example would you cite where it would be best to ignore it?

Today I was reading Daniel 2:44 where it says Daniel 2:44 Authorized (King James) Version 44 And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. What are your thoughts on this verse?

@RebeccasFarm I think so too! 31 Bible results for β€œ"kingdom of heaven"” from Authorized (King James) Version.

I agree! From a Bible point of view what we see these days gives us hope that better things are on the horizon.

I do not think that ignorance is ever bliss, but on the other hand, sometimes we need to accept ignorance, and to make the best of the situation, as best we can do so. We cannot know everything. If our television, our car, our computer, breaks down, most of us are ignorant about how to repair them, but we can still take action to employ an expert, who can do so, for us. We could, of course, take a course to remove our ignorance in these areas, but if we did that in all things, we would probably risk being a jack of all trades then, and a master of none. It is hard to keep up to date in all areas.

So true, where we are ignorant or not competent, we can seek the help of others. No shame in that!

@innertalks I might say that even if he doesn't need us, he wants us because he gave us life and sustains it to this day.

@kanuck1 Yes, even Jesus Christ enlisted helpers, in his disciples, to help his efforts, in establishing a new church, and direction for religion, at that time. Nobody can do it all alone, it seems. Perhaps God needs us, nearly as much as which we need him.

Sadly there will always be a majority of people who live their lives in a state of ignorance is bliss. But that won't stop the natural disasters or the return of Jesus. And we are without excuse on both points. Good post

True, on some things we need to act and not ignore them. Jesus gave us so many signs to look for when his kingdom would come to remove evil from the earth but sadly most people are not making the connections.

It can be for some people. I notice it a lot in politics these days where people vote for a certain party or candidate just because they always did or were led to believe that party is the best for them. In a way their ignorance about what our political leaders will do with our future is similar to Matthew's warning. "They knew nothing about what is happening" until it's too late. And many Americans are paying the price now with crime, inflation, and living paycheck to paycheck. And the sad thing is many will vote the same way again!
