Jimmy Buffett had a lot of humor in his songs, and there were some on my original list for selections in this month-long look at humorous tunes. I just found too many that outranked this one. In light of his passing, I include this for your amusement as a bonus.
BONUS: Gypsies in the Palace - Jimmy Buffett
Life and ink, they run out at the same time
Or so said my old friend the squid
(“If I Could Just Get It on Paper”)
There’s Jimmy Buffett’s brilliance in one line. An incredibly profound statement, given a humorous twist if you interpret “squid” as a literal aquatic creature and not as the nickname for sailors.
Then he could just be FUNNY without being profound. Like here.
Co-written by Glenn Frey (who made a cameo at the end), this tells the tale of “the Order of the Sleepless Knights” who house sit for musicians while they’re on tour. And it’s not a pretty sight, with the insanity of the party (“hey, Snake, this party’s getting dull, throw someone in the pool! Hey, let’s all take our clothes off and form a conga line!”) while “minding the mint.”
And, as Buffett told Frey at the end, he was none the wiser (“I’ve got these two great guys who look after my place, they’re the best!”).
Rest in peace, Jimmy. Thanks for the music and the laughs.
Gypsies in the Palace
Written by Jimmy Buffett, Glenn Frey, and Will Jennings
Recorded by Jimmy Buffett

He was, and it went so far beyond “Margaritaville.”

@FourWalls yes, for sure. That wasn’t my favorite song of his. I did like it though.

You betcha! The first time I saw Buffett he “opened” for the Eagles (not really “opened,” because he did a full two-hour show instead of 40 minutes), then came back out and did the first encore with them. That, appropriately enough, was in Gainesville, Florida.

That’s okay. It’s an album cut. Just had to salute Buffett’s fun side.
