Do you think living in poverty is a sin?
There are many scholars debating about this issue if living in poverty is a sin. Others may say a sin because those who Iive in poverty commit crimes just to save their hunger. However different religious and philosophical traditions may have different perspectives on poverty and sin.
Some religions consider poverty to be a consequence of social or personal factors, while others may emphasize the importance of helping those in need. It is important to note that poverty itself is not seen as a sin or something inherently wrong, but rather actions or situations that perpetuate poverty might be considered unethical or sinful by certain belief systems. What can you say, guys? Thanks for reading, sharing is caring.

Life kicks some people very hard. And now someone wants to say the poor are sinners? According to what I have read, we are all sinners. Pot calling the kettle black.
It's more of a sin to have way more money than you, or your loved ones, can ever need or even spend.

@May2k8, agree the situation is indeed case to case because there are people living in poverty but it might only be a hidden agenda despite member of a gang doing illegal activities just to obtain a lot of money. Those living in poverty per se commit a crime therefore they're sinners.

There are a few aspects that we need to consider regarding poverty.
I can be poor because I am lazy. Its a sin.
I can be poor because I am careless. Its a sin.
I can be poor because I am a show off... Again a sin.
I can be poor because I have inferiority complex. Again a sin.
Why all these are sins in the first place?
We all work. We all earn. We have our needs, and desires. We have our loved ones too, whom we want to give something. So when we spare for others, we are sacrificing our needs, desires.
Using that up to be lazy, careless, show off, or avoid something is unfair towards the really needy.
So who are really needy? Those who have been rendered helpless by natural calamity or other calamities that could not have been planned for like wars or acid attacks or rapes.
With my laziness etc., making me poor, I am kinda depriving the really poor. So yeah....that is a sin. From my perspective.

@vandana7, Hi Vanny, thanks for sharing your thoughts about poverty if it's a sin. Life is what we make it so those living in poverty may fall to those descriptions you mentioned. Laziness for sure leads to poverty. But for me it's not a sin being poor isn't a crime.

More poor live upright life despite being poor. The reason can also be because they fear the law and authority ...which they feel they haven't the money to battle. They cannot afford those lawyers, or charges for running about for justice. So they steer clear of such territory. As they get richer, the attitude too starts changing. So ...its not nature but reality that makes people honest many a times.

I think it would be a sin if you would not do something to make your life better than what you are right now. That means you are not aspiring to better yourself. I think when you were born here you are destined to succeed the only thing that makes one fail is the choices in life they took.

Hmm... I'm not overly religious so... I don't know if I've heard that concept before of poverty being a sin? Do some people say that?
To me, someone can end up in poverty because of different circumstances. Maybe some they brought on themselves (gambling, for example), but surely for others, it was the result of something(s) beyond their control. So poverty in itself is probably not a sin...
What would be a sin is if the person in poverty resorts to bad things because of it.

Dear @cacay1 ,
Yes ofcourse, this leads some poor people to wrong way or short cut routes to earn
I am not saying all poor , some are still being honest & following the legal way to earn.
The rulers around the world can give special opportunity to earn & lift up their life style.

This sounds ridiculous. I have met poor people who live with dignity and are righteous in every way. And I have met some not so righteous people who live in financial abundance. In fact they are rich because of some unethical ways to gain money.

I think poverty itself is not a sin,it was not a sin living in poverty. After all,the poor are far more than the rich in the world. But i wanna say poverty is more likely to cause crime,if a person have enough money, unlikely to commit crime.if no money, especially when a person will starve, likely commit crime to get foods.

@jefferson126, those living in poverty aren't sinners. They're victims of bad circumstances. It becomes a crime if they commit crimes to save hunger which is wrong. They can find work in the labor sectors or ask help to the government.

@jefferson126 , yes, they need training so that they can acquire skills and the government agency must help them by lending money for capital so they can have a dignified life.

Living in poverty is not a sin unless you gambled away all of your belongings to fall into poverty. Jesus isn’t going to condemn people for being poor. The majority of people are not poor for any reason other than being dealt a bad hand in life.

If poverty is not their doing how can that be a sin? In the eyes of God wrong doings for the sake of staying away from hunger is not considered a sin

When I'm young I used to think that being rich is a sin or sign of worldliness. Before living in poverty is like holiness and meekness. But now I agree that poverty is a bad thing.

No it is not a sin and those prosperity Churches who preach that if you give money you will get blessed by God and become rich and be right in God's sight, is pure Christian Heresy. God says in the Bible that there will always be poor people in the world.

@LeaPea2417, yes, agree on that, living in poverty is not a sin but living in the extreme difficulties to attain their daily needs.
