Checking the Cash Bills

Standing in line at the store to pay, the lady in front of me paid in cash with a 10 dollar bill.
The cashier used the counterfeit marker to check her 10 dollar bill .
I rarely use cash these days, so I didn't know. But I remember cashiers did that with 100 dollar bills. When I flat out asked the cashier about it, he said they were required to check all bills, except for 5 and 1 dollar bills.
Wow, are times (and crimes) really that bad now ?
Are your stores/countries checking the cash bills?

I use my debit card . . . I don't want to be carrying around too much cash.
The cashier said he'd rather people pay by card . . . he said it's too much work to mark and check every single bill (yah, leave it to young folks who don't wanna work hard ).

@rebelann That's happened. Well not me, but Hubby - and they didn't get his card - they just got the numbers. Someone ordered a meal from KFC in Pakistan - can you believe it? We didn't have to pay for that. It's happened a few times, but it was reported right away - we were not responsible for the amounts.

@changjiangzhibin89 How interesting that you could also pay with that social app! I assume it must be pretty convenient to use? Is that how most people pay for their goods rather than cash currency?

Criminals are always looking for a new way to make $$$$. I would think making fake money would be pretty hard these days.

With all the security features they are adding to the real bills, I would think it'd be hard to make counterfeits now too. So I wonder why they are checking the smaller bills now . . . maybe the counterfeit situation is worse than I thought ?

Wow that's crazy! Checking a $10 bill. I rarely use cash but thought it was on $50 or $100's too.

I have to check $50 and $100 bills at work.
We don't have pens, though... I have to leave my register and walk over to where they keep the black light doodad by customer service. It's "only" ten feet, but I always tell my customers I'm going to step over there to put on a little show for the corporate overseers should they happen to review the cameras.
My managers don't care if I do it, but one of the corporate goons threw an absolute fit when I took $1500 in 50's and manually verified they were all legitimate. None of them were counterfeit, but in wonderful corporate logic "they could have been and you wouldn't have known!" Uh huh, because they don't have watermarks and color-shifting ink in addition to the UV-sensitive stripes...

I have heard that the pens aren't as accurate. How is the black light thing? Yah, I'm sure you have to do everything as you are supposed to - you never know when upstairs could be watching .
Oh geez. Well what were you supposed to do with that $1500 - refuse it ? You verified it too . . . it's not like you blindly took it in. I did see someone at the grocery store pay for many gifts cards in cash . . . I think it was $700 in 20s . . . now that cashier didn't verify anything so I do hope it was all legit .

@yukimori Everyone should be using that black light then. I wonder why everyone doesn't . . . is it a huge business expense?
Ah, ok, I reread and now I get what you're saying. Right, there are older bills that don't have those security measures . . . whatdya gonna do. I know they want to verify, but yah, there comes a point when it's just overkill.

@much2say The black light is way easier than the counterfeit pens. You just hold the bill under it and the strip on them glows. No false negatives, either.
It wasn't that I accepted it, just that they really want to see us verifying the UV strips on them. I think it winds up being a due diligence thing. If the bank refuses to accept a bill they say is counterfeit, they can show that we did everything by their book and it passed inspection like it should have.
They're also ridiculous about getting us to have a second person do a double count when there are five or more bills in a transaction.

That was strange, but the employer makes the rules and she was following them.
Here our smallest bill is a $5, we have coins for $1 and $2.
Our money is made from a type of plastic, not at all like paper.
I have not seen any of it being checked, even the larger bills, the stores are more likely to post signs advising that they do not take bills of $50 or over.
My pay from my employer goes into my chequing account digitally, and I spend it the same way with my debit card.
Just like cash, it comes in the front door and out the back door.

Plastic ! I wonder what that feels like! The bills are quite colorful, I think? Here, many of the smaller businesses have those signs that say they do not accept bills over so and so - often 20. We have direct deposit too - but is "digital" the one through an app? My daughter's summer job paid with paper checks, but if you wanted direct deposit, it had to be through an app. Seriously, money of any kind is magically . . . it instantly disappears .

@much2say Yes, our bills have always been very colourful.
The plastic feels strange.
They do not crumple up like a normal bill used to and they have no smell.
If you fold them, they will stay that way, and if they have a slight tear on them anywhere that will rip easily and then it is no longer legal tender.

Since my relatives used debit cards to buy groceries, I do not know if the 10 or higher amount dollar bills are checked by the cashiers at Wal Mart.

@much2say Same. Never heard of that. I'd jus tape it myself and try to pass it somewhere. I have received torn, taped bills in change many times. And I have never had a bank not exchange a torn bill so long as I have at least 80% of the bill.

I paid for some Exedrin today, and used a $10 bill. They used the same thing, a marker. I was surprised. Evidently there are even more crooks at work.

Is that just the craziest thing? I don't know when they started doing that - although they've been verifying the bigger bills for a long time of course. I've noticed some places are actually cashless now . . . the phasing out cash seems to slowly becoming a reality. But then there are the crimes involving the cards .

@MarieCoyle Maybe someone got smart to the fact that no one was checking the smaller bills, so printing the counterfeit smaller bills was probably the way to get away with it for who knows how long. How stupid and unworth it though, if they get caught for trying to spend a fake $10 bill - well now they're checking!! But it makes it highly annoying for the rest of us honest people.

I have had clerks check $20 bills many times, but never $10 bills. I was as surprised as you were. Evidently, someone somewhere is probably busy in someone's basement printing a lot of $10 bills.

I wish I had ready sources of cash. I use debit cards mostly. I know the stores pay a percentage to credit cards for processing. I am not sure if it is the same with debit cards. Shame you cannot trust anyone or anything these days.

Yep - I use debit cards too - these days it just isn't safe to be carrying cash (well, cards have their own security issues but that's another story) I've seen some stores charge you extra if you don't use a minimum on credit or debit. Seriously, trust is going out the door.

It must really be that bad . . . there is no such thing as trusted humans anymore . . . everyone is under the watchful eye in case of counterfeiters. If that is the case, and if I have to pay cash, I shall have to get one of those gadgets and use them for when the store gives me back change .
