Puppets that come to life

The photo doesn’t have much to do with the text although it is a doll. There are some ventriloquists who are very talented and their puppets do really seem to have a life of their own. You become involved the performer and his/her ‘doll’ and for me anyway, they become two individuals entertaining us in a magical way. Once, and I don’t know how it came about, maybe it was a busker and his puppet, but at the end of his performance, I saw the handler remove his hand from the back of the puppet, stuff it in a suitcase and shut the lid on it. I was horrified for a few seconds. I knew the thing wasn’t real but I felt quite appalled at its treatment. People are funny, aren’t they? Or is it only me?

Yeah I can see that happening. I might have felt the same. Whatever that drink is in the photo, I'll take it though.

Galway Pipe is a very nice port. Being Irish helps, doesn't it?

I can understand that. You can get very much involved with the performance sometimes.

I can understand why you were horrified, sometimes we forget it's only a puppet.

@JudyEv You are right and some puppets look pretty good, while others are creepy.

The puppeteers are usually very good and you come to believe both are real.

I probably would have reacted the same way if I had witnessed the same thing as you. At least for a few seconds. It's funny how the puppets can seem to take on a life of their own.

They do indeed and suddenly their limbs are bent every which way and they're stuffed in a case.

They do indeed. Those that manipulate them are very clever.

I guess the performer and doll have a strictly business relationship. Shari Lewis would never do that to 'Lambchop." Or Paul Winchell with his ventriloquist dummies Jerry Mahoney and Knucklehead Smith."

Lambchop was one of the first TV shows we ever saw. My Mum absolutely loved that show although we only saw it when we visited friends in the 'city'.

You know you must have seen a very talented person if you felt that way!

That's true but I would get involved with the performance and thought it was a pretty sad end for the puppet to be stuffed into a case.

No, it's not only you. He took the magic away from you when he put the puppet in the case and closed it. It would make me feel the same way.

A good puppet show is great to watch. The people behind the scenes are very talented and ventriloquists even more so.
