Well, that didn't go as expected.

George and I had hoped his doctor's appointment would go well, but they found an abnormal heart rhythm. So now he's supposed to start to take heart medicine. He also needs to work harder to quit smoking and drinking to prevent things from getting worse. But, I can't say I'm surprised by any of this. He will be 63 in ten days and he's been drinking and smoking on and off since I've known him. So at least twenty years now.

He's otherwise healthy. Short of the shoulder pain.

Yeah. The part that concerned me, is she wanted to put him on a blood thinner, too. I'm not sure if that's an age related thing or related to the heart issues, but we declined and decided to go with baby Aspirin, instead.

@kaylachan Yeah, I am not sure what all the reasons might be that people go on those. I know my dad went on him after his first heart attack.

@porwest She seemed to be concerned about blood clots and strokes.

It's very hard to quit these things after years of smoking and drinking. My daughter is trying to quit smoking again for about the 6th time. It's hard. Good luck to him.

Sorry to hear that and I hope all will go well with the medication, However, I must say that sometimes doctors are too quick to put people on medication, Perhaps another opinion is in order just saying,

George and I both agree. She seemed far too hyper focused and was ready to call 011. Based on the reading, both she and the nurse expected him to have symptoms o such as shortness of breath, weakness dizziness chest pain.... to which he had none. If he hadn't driven us here, I might have just said f it, to get that second look from er star, but then that would mean leaving the van there and that's not happening.

@RasmaSandra I'm trying to look into it. For his sake and our piece of mind. My doctor notice my pulse was a little high the last two appointments, but chocked it up to anxiety. Which would be true. I always get anxious before going to the doctor.

@kaylachan well all the best. I am a nervous type so I remember days back in NYC when I had bronchitis and things I needed checked out I would tell the nurses that they might see some unusual heart activity because my heart would be beating harder due to my fright at being examined and what might happen etc, Not everything is always black and white, So just have another doc look at him again,

I hope this is enough for him to give up smoking and drinking. Having to take heart meds is pretty serious.

@kaylachan I have a very good friend that has a husband going through the same thing. He has health issues and can't seem to give up smoking which is causing more problems. I can understand the addiction to smoking and realize that it's difficult to quit. I hope your husband is able to quit and can get heathier.

@Marilynda1225 I think he can. I know many smokers who have admitted, that it's more of a habit and not so much an addiction. My husband has cut down a lot in the twenty years we've been together. But I think he's also scared to go through withdrawal.

I'm sad to hear that. I'm hoping that the heart medication may help to treat the irregular heart rhythm. My partner is also a smoker. I encouraged him to stop before it was too late, but he said it was difficult to break the bad habit.

Yes it is. You have to want to, and fight through withdrawal.

That is a bit concerning. He could end up having a stroke. I hope he will at least cut back. How was his BP?

On the low end, only because of the abnormal heart rate. It was meeting a little fast. Enough they did an EKG on the spot.

@kaylachan If you really believe in God ..
He will surely do a miracle in your husband's life ..
I was a smoker since 1991 .
I will quit for some period & again start to smoke.. Again I will quit.
It happened for 32 years ..
Eventhough I am a smoker I will take very few per day ..
I can say God helped me to quit smoking now .

Sorry to hear this. I certainly hope he can stop smoking for sure! Does he have AFIB? That's what my husband has. He takes a couple of meds for it; but it's not under control. Hope you and George can have a good day.
