Walmart's Great Value Is Made by WHO?

Generics sometimes get a bad rep or simply get called out for being of lesser quality. While that may be true of some generics or store brands, it's usually not the case at all. Why? Because most of these generics and store brands are made by the brand name companies, granted with a slightly different formula most of the time and different packaging obviously. But nonetheless, the quality standards are fairly high when these generics are coming from reputable brands. And they do it because if they don't do it, someone else will. And while they make less money making the generics, they will still make money nonetheless. So, here are some popular Great Value products and who makes them. Great Value peanut butter is made by Peter Pan. Great Value bread is made by Sara Lee. Great Value pretzels are made by H.K. Anderson pretzels. Great Value applesauce is made by Musselman. Great Value whipped cream is made by Kraft. Great Value spices are made by McCormick. Great Value canned vegetables are made by Green Giant. Great Value plastic bags are made by Ziploc. In fact, not only when it comes to Walmart, but nearly every company out there, if it has the store brand on it? It's made by a brand name company. Now you know.

Quite often, if you bother to read, food or not, off-brand products will say something like comparable to *insirt brand name* so, they tend to table on themselves.

@porwest True. But, it gives buyers an idea of what they're getting.

@kaylachan Oh, for sure on that one. That's why they do it.

True. But even if they say that on the label, they are not always directly associated with the compared to brand.

I knew this. I try to persuade hubs to buy more store brands; but for some things he's really hesitant. Hope you have a good day.

@porwest Yes, we have TP and tissues that must be brand names. I'm trying to convert hubby to use more food items that are Great Value. We use a lot of Equate items in the Health & Beauty section.

@porwest I can understand that. And I splurge on potato salad. I will only eat Grandma's Potato Salad which is VERY expensive.

@LindaOHio Funny you mention TP, because for us it is Cottonelle only. Wasn't always that way. But we got tired of having TP remnants in awkward places as well as certain "mishaps." lol

@Tina30219 Now that I think about it, we do usually keep a couple cans of carrots in the house. I can cook them from scratch, but it takes 500 million years to get them soft enough, so the can works better. lol

I haven't bought any canned vegetables in years, but when we did, I often would get the Great Value ones, although I tend to find most canned veggies are cheaper at Aldi or Ruler. I am not sure who makes either of theirs though.

There is a store brand chocolate by Tesco here that can be compared to Nutella.

There's a lot like that. I am pretty sure we have a Nutella knock off here too. In fact, I am sure we do.

Almost all the brand name groceries in one of our largest supermarkets are made in China.

@porwest I don't know that we do either. Personally we don't but more and more of our food items are coming in from overseas. I think we export too much when we should be feeding ourselves with our own products.

@JudyEv I would imagine a lot of food comes from here considering how much food manufacturing we do in the U.S. But I don't know.

That's crazy. There are a few food items here in the U.S. that come from there, but very few. Most of the foods here come from here or Canada and maybe Mexico. I could be wrong about that, but Americans generally do not trust the Chinese with our food.

Most generics nowadays are made by branded companies. There ARE certain "value brands" that are actually standalones. But usually if it is a store brand it's going to be made by a brand name company.

@porwest Well that is good to know, although it never really mattered to me as long as the product was still good, or worked as it should/etc...

I start by trying the generic brands. Some are good, some arenĀ“t. Same with meds. Lately I had an eye problem and went to the doctor. He made a prescription. I asked him if there was something generic and he replied that for eyes generics were out of the question. Generic drops for eyes were not made the same way as the very expensive ones he had prescribed. I bought the expensive ones. But I can accept a generic bag of frozen corn. Not peas though. They are always less tender.

@marguicha Ultimately, so long as you are happy and content with your own personal decision, regardless of the reason, that's all that really matters.

Of course it is. I am sure you remember the old days of white boxes with black lettering. Back then it really was crap. We've come a long way since then.

As some might say, it's just as good as the brand name because the brand name is who makes it. lol

Good to know. I knew they were made by reputable companies. I didn't know which companies. There are some generics that are simply awful though.

It really depends, and it's hard to know who actually makes a particular generic store brand because unless you happen to be in the factory on the production line, most deals made between brand companies and the stores who want a generic version have non-disclosure agreements.

That doesn't surprise me. You are a lot of crazy things, but not against generics. But damn, we could have argued for hours about it if you opposed them. All those lost pennies. Oh well.

That's how the marketing gimmick works. Brands have been associated with trust and quality. Generic products can be equally good..one has to try and find out.

@arunima25 That's what I do. lol There are only a handful of things I will only buy the brand name of. Frank's sauerkraut for example. Rain-X windshield washer fluid. Cottonelle toilet paper. Most things the generic is just fine and sometimes better.

I occasionally buy generic brands, especially if they are nearly as good as the branded ones. These days, I need to be more practical.

So long as the quality is good, to me, brands just aren't worth the premium price for me 99.9% of the time.

Target and Walmart as well as Sam's Club but Walmart and Sam's Club are owned by the same people they just have their name slapped on so they don't have to pay as much for using the brand name. Yes, it is the same thing as most brand names just that the distributor buys directly from them with their own name on it. This also gives them double the earnings because even though there will be a markup on the brand name they can charge less for their own name in-store and get to some degree double back the money. All about those profits and demands.

I learned this years ago when I worked for a Pasta company that many of you would know and I actually worked on the side that made the long goods (spaghetti, lasagna, ect) that 3 days a week went into the name brand packaging and 2 days a week into the generic packaging and then switched the next week and it was the same exactly product. I was very confused when I first started there but then realized some people just will not eat a generic just because it is generic. I figure I will try it and if it tastes good, I'm getting the cheaper one.
