Why is Nigeria hated so bad?

October 16, 2023 6:47pm CST
So I am a Nigerian, but each time I tell people that, they just assume I am a scammer or fraudster and it hits me bad and makes me wonder how it all went downhill with thee image of a great nation.

Hello and welcome to myLot. You know people lace labels on countries and people. I am Italian, why are all Italians supposed to be "Mafiosi"?

@Tmconquers I did not know that Nigerians aren't allowed to get Visas to Dubai. This is incredibly discriminating. Thanks for the compliment to my compatriots. There are many Nigerians who live in Italy. There are about 110,000 Nigerians in Italy registered as regular.

@LadyDuck Come now. We all know you are part of a large crime family. That's why you keep your last name a secret here.

Well you're right. The labels however hinder the chances of some innocent people out there. Did you know Nigerians aren't allowed to get Visas to Dubai. That is just hard. lol. By the way, I think Italians are pretty cool. ;)

Because if you look at your country as a whole, the vast majority are slave labors forced to scam people, because they are either forced and threatened into it, or told it's the only way to survive. Which paints a poor image and the human race is judgmental, especially if a person has fallen for a scam.

@Tmconquers Wile paypal is the preferred payment method for Mylot, there are other ways to earn money online, honestly and without fear.

You are right, that's exactly it. However the thing is this stereotype has affected the country so much that, we are banned from visiting some other countries, banned from enjoying some sites, apps or even financial institutions like PayPal. It is incredibly hard to get a working PayPal account in Nigeria, even when you do some sites and applications will refuse to pay as per PayPal rules. This would in turn affect the people and lead them into fraudulent means to make a living. I guess it is all a cycle. We are stuck in a loop.

It's nothing against Nigeria necessarily, except that Nigeria is NOTORIOUS for that sort of thing. It probably gets blown a bit out of proportion, and I am sure there are less bad people there than good people, but those bad people really make a bad name for the country. Plus, it's such a poor country that everyone is scrambling to do anything they can to try to tip the scales, and unfortunately, a ton of that activity is illegal stuff. BUT, we won't judge you. Promise. lol. Welcome to myLot and I hope you make a good loot here.

I'm sorry you feel this way. Not everyone feels that way. Racism should have been stamped out years ago. If people feel like that about you it's on them, not you. I hope you are well. Have a nice day.

Unfortunately, that is what your country is known for. I think the govt. needs to root out the corruption that is there.Find jobs for people that pay a decent wage so they don't have to scam others for a living.

@Tmconquers Yes, corruption seems to be a huge problem in Africa. I don't know what the solution is.

I don't think Nigerians are hated. According to the 2021 census, more than 270,000 Nigerians (or people born in Nigeria anyway) live in the UK and seem to be getting along OK. I have worked with friends from Nigeria as well as other African countries. But the 'Nigerian scam' has been so common it has become the name used to refer to all sorts of similar fraud!
