Election time

It's almost time for general elections in the United States. Every four years, a president is elected or reelected. Representatives are elected or reelected every two years and senators are elected or reelected every six years. Additionally, local communities elect their local and state leaders. This time around we are voting for state and county politicos with one section for the city school board election. Back in May, we had the primary to nominate those people we’ll be voting for in November. I’ll be working this election like I did in May for the primary. We have to be there by 5AM to set everything up before the polls open at 6. Then we’re there until polls close at 8 followed by the shutting down of everything we hadn’t already got done towards the end. It’s a very long day, but it’s also a very important job to make sure the election runs smoothly. All in all, it’s a satisfying job.

When I was growing up in Philadelphia my mother worked at a polling station, which was in the basement of someone's home. I remember going over ever now and again to see what was going on.

Having driven through different parts of Philly, I can see that happening. There aren't always open spaces within buildings nearby, so a home with an open basement would make sense.

Yeah, our day is 15+ hours. Although it hasn't happened, if there are still people waiting at poll closing time, we stay open for them only and shut down t he rest of the way when they've voted. Long and tiring, but totally worth it.
