How long do you keep your cellphone?

I have had this phone for over 2 years now. I would love to upgrade, but I won't do it until this phone breaks. Do you upgrade your phone every year, or whenever you are elgibile for one, or do you wait until the old one is no longer useable for some reason? I don't see the reason to put aside a perfectly good phone, unless my upgrade was guaranteed to be free, and I don't have that option with this one.

I use to upgrade every two years until this last round. But it's not by choice. I went and gave Android another shot and now I'm stuck with it until financial weather improves. I've had it three years... feels more like 10. Ha!
(And no... no iPhone/Android debate. Lol. We all love what we love and that's what makes the world go 'round. ;)

Sometimes you are forced to get another phone by circumstances.

I need a new one because this one is no more updates..I hate the way they do that so people have to buy new phones. But I cant afford a new one. I really should get the free phones, but when I had one, they were such crap.

The free phones are a LOT better now than they used to be. Just call and ask what phone you'd get if you signed up for the free services. You might be surprised.

@RebeccasFarm When I was fired because I kept missing work because my eyes kept swelling shut, Pretty signed us up for free phones. I'm not happy with the service we have but Pretty loves the new phones. (I'm still using the phone I bought before I got fired and she is using the two new phones to earn money online.)

Like most things, we keep our cellphones until they do not work as they should.
When things slow down, and with apple products, they get a bit slower every time a new version comes out, we put up with what we have for a bit, and then when it is time we go in for a new one. But without a specific time frame, just knowing that we have gotten our money's worth out of the device is enough.
I feel like my hubby's phone, which is 1 older than mine, is ready to be replaced as he cannot bring up the internet on it anymore. The touch screen on mine is beginning to go, but I should be able to squeeze a couple more years out of it.
We pay alot for the screen cover and the holder and in my case the pop holder on the back that we need to keep the device as those accessories always run at least $150 and you cannot use those on another device.

Sis and fam all have iPhones. They were able to get several devices on a family plan, but not sure they still have that now as the boys are both working with good jobs...they don't need to be on a family plan.

@Juliaacv You can really save a lot of money, but you may have to be under the same roof. I don;t know.

I don't mine learning to use a new one. I hate transferring things between phones though.Something always is lost and has to be re downloaded.

@snowy22315 - Transferring things is the most annoying thing when we buy a new phone.

When my job was selling cellphones, I upgraded every two to two and a half years. If your phone is too old when you're selling them, people won't buy phones from you. (Pretty always wanted my phones after I upgraded and she'd use them until they didn't work anymore.)
I've had the one I own now for four years and it's still working fine.

Yes, I think it is silly to buy a new one until you need to.

I can't even remember how old my phone is. I upgrade only when my phone breaks. I barely even use my phone to need a new one. I don't use half the things on the phone. Last time I got a knew phone this young kid was trying to sell me on the newest iPhone, and I was like hell no that's too much money. What's the cheapest you have? I brought my son with, and he told the sales guy you're not going to talk him into all the newest phones. He was trying to tell me all the things these phones do but the one thing he was not telling me was if the phone makes phone calls. lol
So, I asked him, do any of these phones make phone calls? I was like okay that's the kind of phone I want.

I kept my iPhone 7 until Apple stopped doing updates, then I sold it to a used phone store for $45 (since I actually owned it). I’ve had this one for, I think, four years.

We have basic flip phones and don't need smartphones. We hardly ever have them on. Have a good day.

Basic flip phones have their place. My former roomie was more comfortable with those than smartphones. I think my mother might have a flip phone too, but most of them you can text on so that is good.
