Day 105
Acts 16:25 At midnight Paul and Silas prayed and sang hymns to God, and the prisoners listened to them.
26 Suddenly a great earthquake shook the foundations of the prison, and immediately all the doors opened, and everyone’s chains fell off.
27 The keeper of the prison, awakened from sleep saw the prison doors open, supposing the prisoners had fled, drew his sword, and was about to kill himself.
28 Paul called with a loud voice, saying, “Do yourself no harm, for we are all here.”
29 Then he called for a light, ran in, and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. 30 He brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”
31 They said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your entire household.”
32 Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and everyone in his house.
33 He took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes. Immediately they baptized him and his entire family.
34 Now when he had brought them into his house, he set food before them; and he rejoiced, having believed in God with his entire household.
Prisons don’t only have locks and keys. Many people find themselves imprisoned in their minds, or in bondage to their way of life. Depression holds them captive. Various phobias do the same. Yet, rarely, whether behind locked doors or in the prison of the mind, do people sing.
Paul and Silas found themselves in prison because they drove a demon from a slave girl. Her masters saw their profits disappear and brought them to the magistrates with accusations about how they troubled the city by telling the people about the way of salvation. While in prison, Paul and Silas sang hymns to God. When they did, God shook the prison with an earthquake so that the prison doors opened, and their chains fell off. Instead of running, they stayed. When the keeper of the prison saw the doors open and the prisoners were still in the prison, he asked Paul and Silas how he could be saved. They told him he only needed to believe in Jesus Christ to receive salvation; he and his entire household. Then Paul and Silas told them about Jesus and his entire household believed. After they baptized him and his household, the jailer washed their stripes and fed them.
As Christians, Jesus unlocked your prison door when you accepted Jesus as Savior and Lord. Yet many Christians still feel those prison doors locked against them. Satan will do everything he can to tell them their salvation isn’t real. They believe he holds the key to their prison. However, when Christians pray, read their Bible, and sing songs of praise and worship, they unlock their prison doors. They rejoice in their salvation as the jailer and his household did and find joy in their salvation again.
What is holding you prisoner? Sing. Are you having a rough day? Sing. Is your life in chaos? Sing. When you do your chains will fall off and you can open your Bible and pray. Don’t let Satan hold you prisoner when Jesus unlocked your prison door and set you free.
Let’s pray: Father, thank you for unlocking my prison door and setting me free from Satan’s hold on me. Help me sing when he tries again to hold me captive. Let the chains fall off. Shake the foundation of my prison as I worship and praise You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

I remember every morning my mother would sing cheerful songs to her lord. It made me feel good to wake up to such cheerful singing.
Singing does bring us joy.
