My whole life, I have wanted two things. One: To become a doctor and Two: To raise a family. The closer I come to the first, the more impossible the second becomes. Can these two things be balanced? Can a family and an ambitious career work together?

you wanted to be a doctor to rise a family but i must be a doctor to help my community and family..i think it will be balance when you start a new thing which show the way to your family to succeed not work for them..hope you not become a doctor who fail because of family or the family ruin because of you.

:-) Thanks for the reality check. In all honesty you are probably right. Helping people is more important to me than raising a family, so I will probably just go on to become a surgeon. I think, like you said, that to do both would only cause me to stretch too thin and mess one up. I appreciate that!!!

It's possible, but difficult. If raising a family is really important try to choose a medical specialty that has more manageable hours that won't have you working a zillion hours or on call all the time. I've heard of many med students who don't want the endless hours that many doctors have, so they're going for specialties that may pay less but offer more chances for social life, family, etc.

Thank you for the advice. I am looking into specialties now and I think what you said is a good idea. Family is really special to me so I think I will probably opt for the lower income when that time comes.

I think it is definitely possible. You just need a supportive significant other. My wife is in medical school and we have a little one. Just don't become a surgeon. Choose a specialty that will allow you to still have time for your family

Thank you so much for the response. It will definately be a challenge and I hope my future family supports me the way that you are supporting your wife. Good luck to her and to you.
