mushroom... coffee?

As you all know, I bring home free things from work when they're being discarded from inventory. Recently I found several bags of ground coffee in the discards area, but this was no ordinary coffee -- it was organic Peruvian coffee with FUNCTIONAL MUSHROOMS.
You read that right. It was ground coffee with ground mushrooms mixed in.
Weird as that sounds, I couldn't pass up a free pound of coffee, so I got a single bag of it. Mushrooms are supposed to be great for our bodies in regards to stress and cortisol regulation, so it at least couldn't hurt to drink them in coffee form (especially since no one in the house has a mushroom allergy). I figured if I hated it, I could just throw it out and not be out any money.
As it turns out, it doesn't taste particularly mushroomy, at least not this brand. If someone had served the coffee to me without telling me it had mushrooms in it, I wouldn't be able to tell much of a difference. If anything, the mushrooms might add a bit more depth of flavor, but it still just tastes like a cup of coffee.
Have you ever had mushroom coffee? Would you try it?

@crossbones27 Apparently the OTHER kinds of mushrooms could be legalized here... not yet, but it's being explored.

I think that's the kind of coffee some of us expected it to be!

@spiderdust Did the flavor get concentrated at all? We never have enough coffee to save . . . we make so little of it and only on weekends. I want to go find that mushroom coffee!

I just realized that the iced coffee I had this morning while working was leftover mushroom coffee from the weekend. Whenever we make a pot of coffee in the morning, we pour what doesn't get drunk into a mason jar in the fridge, and then I use that as iced coffee during the week. It just tastes like coffee, nothing weird at all!

My thinking exactly! At $20 a package, I'm unlikely to buy it again, or at least not regularly, but it was better than I feared.

My daughter received a bag for a gift. We tried it and like you, did not see a lot of difference in taste. She made the comment that she checked the price on the brand she had, and it's more than the average cost. Hey, if it's free coffee, I am always going to try it out!

Do you remember what brand it was? This one was made by Laird.

@MarieCoyle Apparently it's on sale this week for $30! That's pretty expensive coffee though, especially for instant.

She says it was Ryze. I remember when she looked it up to see it's benefits, etc. it was over $35 for one little bag.

I hadn't tried this brand before, but it's the Laird brand. I guess they're known more for superfood supplements than coffee, but the coffee isn't bad at all.

I guess it's a growing trend. There's a whole display of mushroom products on an endcap in my store right now (not including this coffee).

Never had mushroom coffee. Would love to try. But mushroom soup is pretty good.
