Introducing Beau

The horse in the photo is Beau, whose name used to be Mr Bubbles. His new owner didn’t fancy standing out in the paddock calling out ‘Mr Bubbles, Mr Bubbles' so now he is Beau. His previous owner rode him in endurance rides but now he will be used for pleasure rides by the lady where we’re house-sitting. He is wearing a fly-veil. These are popular in Australia where we have a lot of flies. Some, including Beau’s, has a flap that goes down over the nose and acts as a shield against the sun. Grey/white horses and those with white noses can get sunburnt during our hot summers, and sometimes gets cancerous growths. Because the nose piece is the same colour as Beau, you can't see it very well. They have even cut out pieces so his nostrils aren't covered up. Some horses that are sensitive to fly and mosquito bites wear cotton rugs during the day as well.

Oh, I thought he was just camera shy. It’s great that he’s enjoying “retirement” and also that his owners are careful to keep him from exposure to sun and insect bites.

I did not know that horses could get sun burns. I am glad that the owner is using a fly-veil to protect Beau.

The sunburn can turn to skin cancer so it makes sense to protect the horse as much as possible.

I looked up his endurance records and he did three 80km rides with a heavyweight rider back in 2018.

Fly-veils used to be just a series of short strings hanging over their eyes and when they shook their heads the strings would disturb the flies. The more modern ones stop the flies getting in.

He is nicely conformed. I checked his records. He'd done three 80km endurance rides two owners ago carrying a heavyweight rider.

Those fly veils and fringes and light rugs are becoming more popular here too. Some horses are just tortured by flies.

@JudyEv I can sympathise with that. When I lived on the river I got bitten a lot and developed some sort of reaction where the bitten area would swell up really badly. Luckily since I have had less exposure that over-reaction seems to have subsided.

@Fleura Vince reacts quite badly now to mosquito bites too. We do what we can to avoid being bitten. I guess most people do but we are much more aware than we used to be.

I had one who seemed to be allergic to mosquito bites and would rub himself raw if he wasn't kept rugged, etc.

I just checked his profile on the endurance site and he was Sir Bubbles rather than Mr Bubbles. It's still a bit of a funny name though.

I've noticed flies can be particularly relentless to horses and cows. My Uncle and Aunt had both and they did seem to always be around the poor animal's eyes. That's a good invention!

It would seem odd to rename a mature horse. But hey, it was his horse, so his prerogative. I think I mentioned once the story of Cal who started as Debra, which is an absolutely ridiculous name for a cat. We chose Callie until we realized she had balls, and it then just became Cal. lol

I wondered about changing a horses name too but didn't say anything. The present owner thinks Beau is a bit similar and says he seems to be reacting to his new name.
