Introducing Beau

The horse in the photo is Beau, whose name used to be Mr Bubbles. His new owner didn’t fancy standing out in the paddock calling out ‘Mr Bubbles, Mr Bubbles' so now he is Beau. His previous owner rode him in endurance rides but now he will be used for pleasure rides by the lady where we’re house-sitting.
He is wearing a fly-veil. These are popular in Australia where we have a lot of flies. Some, including Beau’s, has a flap that goes down over the nose and acts as a shield against the sun. Grey/white horses and those with white noses can get sunburnt during our hot summers, and sometimes gets cancerous growths.
Because the nose piece is the same colour as Beau, you can't see it very well. They have even cut out pieces so his nostrils aren't covered up. Some horses that are sensitive to fly and mosquito bites wear cotton rugs during the day as well.

Oh, I thought he was just camera shy.
It’s great that he’s enjoying “retirement” and also that his owners are careful to keep him from exposure to sun and insect bites.

It's good that Beau is well protected from flies and sunshine.

That is covering his eyes too unless that veil is transparent.

Poor things with the flies and the sun
Well, yes a shorter name makes sense.

I’ve never seen a horse with a fly-veil.

@JudyEv It’s good that they have this to help with the annoying flies.

@JudyEv I can sympathise with that. When I lived on the river I got bitten a lot and developed some sort of reaction where the bitten area would swell up really badly. Luckily since I have had less exposure that over-reaction seems to have subsided.

The dog that is in my profile pic was named Beau. Good for the sun shield.

I didn't realize that horses can get sunburned, but I guess it makes sense. Hope Beau likes his new name and his new home.

White and grey horse are most at risk and those with white blazes on their faces.

I've noticed flies can be particularly relentless to horses and cows. My Uncle and Aunt had both and they did seem to always be around the poor animal's eyes. That's a good invention!

It would seem odd to rename a mature horse. But hey, it was his horse, so his prerogative. I think I mentioned once the story of Cal who started as Debra, which is an absolutely ridiculous name for a cat. We chose Callie until we realized she had balls, and it then just became Cal. lol
