The state capital building in Baton Rouge has so much more to offer than the assassination site of Huey Long. The architecture is amazing, both inside and outside. While it has the modern amenities and security, the looks of everything is that you’re in a building from the 1930s. Because of that, a number of movies have been filmed there. Among those are Dead Man Walking and The Toy. I’ll tell ya, it’s a beautiful building to walk around. The price is right, too: FREE! You know what else they have for free? A million-dollar view! You can take the elevator up to the 24th floor, then transfer to another elevator for the final three-floor ride to the observation deck. The photos you see here were taken from the observation deck. The top photo is something I showed more “up close” in 2021: the statue of Huey P. Long. On the bottom is the Mississippi River and downtown Baton Rouge. If you’re ever in Louisiana’s capital city make sure you set some time aside to visit the capital building!

@FourWalls It must be in stark contrast to the modern buildings.

I love older architecture like that. That was built in the early 20th century and it’ll still be there when all the modern buildings have crumbled.

I have been in Louisiana, but only in New Orleans. Shame that I missed such beautiful view.

New Orleans isn’t very appealing to me. I saw what I wanted to see there yesterday. Lots of swamps in Louisiana, but lots of beauty, too.

@FourWalls I cannot say that I really enjoyed New Orleans. I enjoyed a cooking class that I had there and a Mississippi cruise, but I did not find the city extremely interesting.

I visited Baton Rouge as a child, but I didn’t see this view. It certainly is a pretty one!

@FourWalls You're right. It can be a real pain to find parking in any kind of urban beach setting.

No, haven’t seen the movie. Free is good. One of the amazing things about Biloxi is all the free parking on the beach. You won’t find that just anywhere.

Oh, did I have a great time seeing things there! I love that old architecture to begin with, and the bonus of the Huey Long site and the great (and free, can you believe that!) observation deck just made it a wonderful visit. Then I had those Muscovy ducks joining me for lunch by the lake after I’d finished.

Never been in Louisiana, The capital looks lovely. Lucky the kept the French version of the name Baton Roughe or else the capital would have been Red Stick,

There’s lots of heavy French influence in Louisiana. It’s the only state in the union with “parishes” instead of “counties,” and their legal system is based on Code Napoléon so lawyers in Louisiana have to take a completely different bar exam for the other 49 states (and vice versa). When I was at the Huey Long site there was a tour group that came by with a French tour guide!
