Did You Ever Wonder Why...?

I think most of us know that cats will jump into any box big enough to hold them and that it makes them feel safe, but why are cats afraid of cucumbers? Some experts say it may be because it reminds them of snakes(but why would a cat that doesn't live around and never experienced a snake still be fearful?). Cats are aware of everything around them so maybe this new object startles them. Hmm. An elongated green object could certainly make one think of a snake but a domesticated city-dwelling cat?

Cats are afraid of snakes for the same reason people are afraid of snakes. People who have never seen a snake will jump and run if the see a section of hose on the ground and someone says it's a snake. Snakes eat cats so cats are afraid of them.
I've never heard of a cat being scared of a cucumber before.

Snakes are nasty. Cats are smart. So other cats tell the young ones? My question is how do all cats just know this?

@celticeagle No, it seems to be instinctive... they're born knowing snakes are dangerous.

Maybe it is just the English version. They are longer and might look more like a snake to them.

Hubs and I have always thought that the cucumbers or zucchinis remind cats of snakes. Maybe it's an inborn thing with them. Have a great day.

OMG! I never heard of that! I'm going to get a cucumber and see how my pair react.
One thing I can come up with is that there are some lizards that grow large enough to kill cats, and that could come from ancient reactions to the lizards. I know my cats have no problems with snakes, they go after them like crazy. That's one reason why I don't let them outside. Nothing like having your cat bring you a snake as a present! It's like when my Siamese brought a big garden snake in my Mom's house at the lake. We both totally lost it and ended up calling the neighbor man to deal with it. (We didn't know he was horribly afraid of snakes too. He was going to bring his service revolver down to shoot the snake, but he wasn't too sure how many holes we would stand in the floor. He was a police officer until he retired.) He brought down a shovel and scooped it up and hauled it outside and put it in a neighbor's yard.

I've really started something now. I've had mice as a present but no snakes, please! Men do come in handy sometimes.
