Do you think a dictatorship in the United States is possible?

What is scary about former US president Donald Trump is that he is not hiding his intentions to become a dictator if he is elected president again in 2024. Do you think this could actually happen? I wonder whether people have their head in the sand when they dismiss Trump as a failed businessman sliding into dementia and trying to avoid prison. Is this report simply trying to sell advertising space? Or had we better start following politics more closely than we my have in the past? What are your thoughts?

This is just more stupid rhetoric to try to crush who is the clear winner coming up. It won't work, just like all the other things they have tried have failed. It's also Anderson Cooper. It's CNN. What do you expect from them? He's washed up and CNN can't get five people to tune into their broadcasts. Of course, you are aware that Cooper is actually a Vanderbilt, and there are some pretty dark secrets around that once, very wealthy family. Perhaps looking into the one telling the story is worth as much attention as the story he tries to tell. As for the "dicatator" argument, it is a story that has been told time and time again when the "other side" gets too close to a win. Even my side tried it when we suggested Obama might seek a third term and install a "New World Order." It is ALL patently ridiculous no matter who tries to sell the argument. Beyond that, how REAL dictators become dictators is that they STEAL elections and remove the balance of power in all parts of the government. Something the democrats seem to be engaged in if you ask me.

Democrats are trying to win elections. What you say here is what Trump is saying he intends to do. Whether he can pull it off remains to be seen. Heh. I heard that the Kennedy elders made a part of their fortune bootlegging. But I haven't researched it. Heck, a part of MY OWN fortune comes from the fact that I knew how to sneak on IC trains when I was in high school. Shh. Don't tell anyone.

I go back to this because even looking at 2024 who is Biden's BIGGEST threat? Trump. And who has the democrat party tried to destroy? Trump. Not only are they trying to destroy Trump, but they are also trying to put him in prison. They will fail of course. But the fact that they are TRYING to remove a political opponent should be one of THE most alarming things Americans would EVER be witness to, because that is EXACTLY what murderous, dictator regimes do. They remove their opponents from power by FORCE through whatever means necessary, using the power of the government to do it. NOBODY SEES WHAT'S GOING ON HERE? I mean it is so obvious even PUTIN came out and said it. The democrats are not trying to WIN an election. They are trying to stack an election in their favor BY DEFAULT. That's not winning. That's not liberty and democracy. And that is not how you represent the American people or maintain the integrity of elections. That is how you turn the country into a dictatorship.

Hitler rose to power at the perfect time. Germany was in (relatively) dire straits, thanks to WWI.

@LeaPea2417 I don't WANT to believe a poll that suggests something like that. But Trump actually got almost half of the popular vote in 2016. Blame Russian Facebook posts if you want. But that is scary. Anything can happen.

Trump certainly would try. Remember he posted about "suspending the Constitution" and he also said that maybe the US should try having a president for life.

Some are suggesting he may try an insanity defense to stay out of prison. But I believe he is too "proud" to do that. Here's a thought: If Trump suddenly accepted his fate, and dropped out of the race, would it lead to some Moderates (like me) voting for Christie or another common-sense Republican candidate? Trump could then claim (hopefully from prison) that "he did it for the American people," and preserve some degree of dignity. And the United States of America could get back to Democracy.

@TheHorse Trump will NEVER drop out of the race. He will be the nominee even if he winds up "governing" from a prison cell. I've said for many months now that if there had to be a GOP president I would prefer it be CC. That is saying something coming from a teacher who lived through 8 years of him as the governor of NJ. I don't know enough about the rest of them to really have a second choice--maybe Nikki Haley? DEFINITELY not DeSantis. It is a shame that CC has no chance. I would have liked to have seen Larry Hogan run too but as a Trump critic he also has no chance.

If you support that idea, it could happen to your country. I really believe you should think twice before doing so, or else many of the things you enjoy right now will be stifled, and a few of the elites will rule your country. We had many bad experiences having one in the past so I suggest you do not allow this kind of people be in power at all.

@TheHorse It is quite easy to change a democratic administration into a dictatorial one, but it is very difficult to return to democratic governance after tyranny has been established, so I hope your electorate thinks twice before allowing that to happen.

@Tina30219 But I have read several books about him. I feel sorry for him. I believe he had severe dyslexia as a child, leading to his sense of inferiority and his cognitive deficits. His disabilities do not justify his behaviors, but they help explain them.

what is truly scary is the idiot in the office right now. Inflation, tax and retax, spending gone mad, getting ready for a war, not to mention the dirty money he is involved in. Trump really is the least of my worries, doubt he's getting reelected anyway. I think most Americans are just tired of the "old guy" race. All President Biden can think of is, where should I fall down next, how do I get off stage, and when is my next check from China getting here?

A lot of people don't really do their own due diligence and don't know what a good job Joe Biden is doing. Unemployment is low, jobs are being brought back to the US, and the GDP is rising. But he (Biden) doesn't have a coherent policy about the border(s), and it's not clear (to me) what he's doing around energy independence. I am OK with more drilling and more pipelines, so long as they're done responsibly. I'm not sure what you mean about China. I'd probably vote for Christie or that lady I'd never heard of until recently (or Cheney's daughter, Liz, if she ran), but it's important to keep Trump as far away from public office (or even business) as possible. Which books have you read about Trump and Biden? I went on a bit of a binge during Covid.

With AI increasingly on the prowl with some saying it can wreak havoc on our lives, what we take for granted will go for a toss. Anything goes will be the refrain when we are on thin ice. People can behave irrationally too. It can be a modern version of The Pied Piper of Hamelin

Anything, sad to say, is possible, but anything hopefully never comes to pass. I think the trouble, not just in the USA, but mostly elsewhere also, is that for some reason we have really bad quality politicians these days. And if add the serious lack of critical thinking capacity out there, we get the result where bad people get to do bad things by license of majority vote.
