Well, it may be time for controversy. I hope not. Most people with three working brain cells can tell that today’s song in the list of favorites with “gonna” in the title is all about music….but you never know. Let’s get on with it!
#9: The South’s Gonna Do It - Charlie Daniels Band
“Be proud that you’re a rebel.” Ah, things were so much simpler in the 70s, with a song like this and Lynyrd Skynyrd with Confederate flags onstage.
A few people raised eyebrows over the song then, but Charlie Daniels put them in their place quickly: “I’m damn proud of the south, but I sure as hell am not proud of the Ku Klux Klan. I wrote the song about the land that I love and my (musical) brothers.”
No kidding! This song is all about music, with a long list of southern rock acts listed. Some are famous (Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker Band [“the Tucker boys are cookin’ down in Caroline”]), and some aren’t (“diggin’ Barefoot Jerry” [who had one, ahem, “hit,” “You Can’t Get Off With Your Shoes On”]).
And poor Elvin Bishop…. (Well, it is true! And this was released BEFORE his big hit “Fooled Around and Fell in Love.”)

I liked the music of the late Charlie Daniels since I found out that he was a patriot.

Yes, he was very patriotic and very devoted to performing for veterans.

They probably don’t play anything by him anymore except “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.”

I loved that Geico commercial he did. “Does Charlie Daniels play a mean fiddle?”

It! And, in the 70s, with all those southern rock bands, they DID!! Lots of great music came out of those bands in the 70s.
