The Tuesday before Thanksgiving, my oldest son and I traveled to visit my mother, his grandmother. Grandma lives about 90 minutes away, and to get from here to there, we actually have to cross a river and drive through the woods. We made a stop on the way to pick up lunch for the three of us from one of her favorite restaurants. Grandma loves Brunswick Stew. What is Brunswick Stew? you ask. Brunswick Stew is a southern US stew that’s been around forever, and it seems no two cooks make it exactly the same way. To paraphrase Wendi from LoavesandFishes.net, Brunswick Stew is a smoky, meaty, stew chock full of vegetables with a rich tomato zing. Here is a link to her North Carolina Brunswick Stew recipe. Originally made using rabbit or squirrel meat, Brunswick Stew is most often prepared using chicken or pork. Grandma likes hers with pork. During and after lunch, I was, for the most part, a silent bystander. Grandma peppered her eldest grandson with questions about what’s been happening with him since she last saw him at Christmastime last year. We stayed and visited for about two hours. Grandma begins to tire if visitors linger much longer than that. Then it was back through the woods and over the river to our house to discover what new baked goods my missus had prepared during our absence. ©2023 Douglas W Davis All Rights Reserved

I'm sure your mom was happy to see you and your son. I have to agree with @RasmaSandra that the song is now playing in my head I've never heard of Brunswick Stew but would probably choose pork like your mom.

Glad son was able to spend some time with this grandma. Sis and bro in law hosted a traditional Tgiving dinner for our clan. A fine time was had by all.

Pork or chicken both have their flavors. I would have to agree with Grandma for I enjoy pork the most. The drive to Grandma's house sounds delightful.

Thank you for visiting Grandma. I am sure she loved seeing you. So many old people are lonely and sad because their family pretends they don't exist. I bet she really loved that stew.

We visit once a month. More often if we can. On each visit, we bring her lunch from one of her favorite restaurants.

I'll bet Grandma loved spending time with her son and grandson - sounds like it was a wonderful visit. We're going on a 90 minute drive to my mother in law's tomorrow . . . but no river or woods - just lots of freeway time.

Your mother woud have been thrilled to see her grandson. My Mum's diaries are peppered with news about her grandsons. She had seven but no grand-daughters. Luckily a great grand-daughter or two came along before she passed away.
