Have you noticed that you can have actual conversations with your fur friends? This morning, after I had stumbled to the kitchen to put on my coffee water, I noticed that Kitty's dry food dish was empty. I told her what I planned to do today (in English) and then put some dry food in her dish. After a couple of bites, she started walking slowly toward the bathroom, making sure I noticed. I said, "Don't drink from the toilet bowl. I'll check you water dish." She immediately stopped, and started walking back toward her dishes. I grabbed her water dish (it was almost empty) and filled it up In the bathroom. She waited for my return. I put the bowl in front of her and gave her a deep but brief back rub. She was already purring. She drank. I returned to my desk. I find it fascinating how we have conversational "scripts," familiar things we talk about, with our friends, kids, and even fur friends. Can you think of an examples of conversations you've had with nonverbal, or pre-verbal, critters?

I talk all the time with cat and the one of my neighbors. The one of my neighbors is more vocal and smarter. When I ask "are you thirsty Bubi?" he gets close to the birds bath and touch the water with his paws to let me know that he wants fresh water.

@LadyDuck What's funny is that I am NOT a cat person. I'll see if I can find a cartoon that reminds me of how I feel about Kitty. Did you get American cartoons (Bugs Bunny, etc.) in childhood days in Europe?

@TheHorse just to make it even more interesting since Freddie is the one how listens to me the most I also start talking to him in Latvia to see if he can learn another language as well. My cat Sid was exposed to both English and Latvian in Latvia and words that meant something to him would prick up his ears and meow whether it was English or Latvian like Want fish or Gribi zivi he was bilingual,

Actually, I don't think so. We are technically a "no pets" apartment building. But our manager knows that I "take care of the apartment complex kitty." She's been around here for a few years.

Yes. I can't, even casually say "I wonder what's out there?" Rufus dog will leap up and zip to the window, barking. I can't say "I think I'm going to sneeze." More loud barking.

I ask passing cats if they'd like a pet. If they do, they come up to me. If they don't want one, they just keep on going down the road.

With doggies, I drop my fingers down and let them sniff said fingers. If they want a neck or butt scratch, they move forward and receive what was asked for.

Our parakeet is bird-verbal . We do have conversations . . . she opens and closes her beak - not sure if she is trying to get the words out or is mocking me .

That's cute! Well, I believe that our furry friends can understand us and even try to respond when being asked. I have a kitten I called Ming and she's pretty smart. Whenever I say no, he can't jump, he purrs as if complaining.

Yes, I believe that they understand exactly. I know a cat that does things just to make you angry and then sits there and laughs at you. It is his idea of fun, to taunt you. If he was a human being, he would be the schoolyard bully. He is not a bad cat, he just likes to whip up some dust clouds around you. He is my favorite cat.

My student at school. The most common thing I tell him is "that's not food". He speaks with actions--transfers himself to my lap when he wants a big hug.I talk to him like I believe he understands, because he does. Bitty cat--I have a song I call her with, but Bob claps his hands a certain number of times. Bruno "yodels" about things he wants to call to my attention. Lots of purrs from both the critters

Goldie would wrinkle her brow and give a growl that sounded like “out” when I’d ask her if she wanted to go outside to pee. Freckles was brilliant at telling me to stop what I was doing and hold her.

They are good at letting their vassals know that they need. Kitty has a tendency to walk directly in front of me and then stop. I know I've forgotten to do something, like give her wet food before I do to Guitar Center.

I always used to talk to my dogs. They love to hear their owners' voices. The tails would wag; and they would wait to hear a familiar word like "out" or "treat". I miss them so much. Have a good weekend.
