Now, more than ever, we could use some tips on how to make our money go further. In the coming weeks and months, I will try to give you some useful tips on how to save money in various categories. Today's tip deserves a post all its own. Books are very expensive; but most people like to read them....and once you read them, most people either donate them or pass them on to someone else...so why spend $$ purchasing a new book? BOOKS YOUR PUBLIC LIBRARY *Your public library is a source of print and eBooks and so much more. Check with your local library; but our libraries carry: books, eBooks, CDs (music), DVDs (movies), board games, video games, driver cones (Yes! You can borrow them to practice parking!), puzzles, laptops, newspapers and more. *They have services such as passport services, a notary and voter registration. *You can copy, print, scan and fax a document for a fee. *You can get free COVID test kits. *They have Story Time for the kids, book clubs, photo contests, informative and educational programs and so much more. *And lets not forget the LIBRARY BOOK SALES. What an opportunity to pick up boxes of books for a cheap price. Go on the last day and many libraries have $1 a bag pricing. PROJECT GUTENBERG These are eBooks for which the copyright has expired; and the books are in public domain. Go to: gutenberg.org LIBRARY OF CONGRESS You can browse eBooks, judicial opinions, old playbills, newspapers and more at loc.gov/collections AMAZON PRIME READS & MORE Do you have an Amazon Prime membership? Then make sure to take advantage of their free eBooks. Sign up for Amazon Prime Reads. Each month you will receive an email with a selection of free books. amazon.com/firstreads You can also go to and find Kindle books that you can download for free OR The Top 100 Free Best Sellers https://www.amazon.com/Best-Sellers-Kindle-Store/zgbs/digital-text/ref=zg_bs?_encoding=UTF8&tf=1 OR pay $9.99 per month and join Kindle Unlimited and get access to over 1 million titles. You can read as many as you want in one month. https://reedsy.com/discovery/blog/kindle-unlimited OR check out the 3rd party booksellers. I purchase good condition books for as little as $.99 plus $4 shipping. I've never been disappointed. IS THAT IT? Not by a long shot. You can try BOOKBUB, FREE-EBOOKS.NET, BARNES & NOBLE ONLINE, APPLE BOOK STORE and GOOGLE PLAY BOOKSTORE. AND search under "Free books and ebooks" and be connected with many more options. AND search under "Free Audiobooks" if that's your preference and be connected with many options. Photo Credit: Pixabay (picture of a library)

My hubby 'hangs out' with the twins 4 days a week in a library. They host government sponsored play groups in our province. Free of charge, and with highly educated faclitators. I used our public library before the internet interrupted my life, and I began reading here, but it isn't the same. We have a Literary Angel Program at the library in the small town closest wo where we used to live. When someone passed away, you contact the library and give them a donation, and tell them a bit about the person that you are buying a book in memory of. They try to find something suitable to buy that they would have been interested in, and place a placard on the inside of the book that it was donated by whom and for whom, then they send the donator and the next of kin a letter explaining the book purchased and asking them to come by and view it. It helps with closure and allows their name to continue on in the community.

@jstory07 It is nice to reinvest in the community library by paying respect to a family that is grieving.

Thank you for all the useful tips. I read a lot and reread my books and do not like ebooks, I have seen our large library but the bus schedules here are crazy and the library is far from me, I do not take Amazon Prime because I cannot afford to have money taken for it each month and despite all the free movie, shows etc I do fine with what I have and only order from Amazon when I get gift cards,

I'm glad there are so many options for people to get free books. I see evidence of that in my royalties. They are next to nothing because most people get eBooks. It's not fun being an author when people can get free books. Not complaining. I'm glad they're reading.

I don't read, but those are good tips. My son reads for school, so we buy his books at thrift stores.

These are some good tips. We do have some good and old libraries in Delhi. Yet most are not that well maintained and I have not checked any in a long time. Yet the last I saw, they were just providing basic services. May be I need to check if there are any with added services now.

Great list of book stuff . I have seen most of these . . . the public library is a wonderful resource for us - online and locally! We were actually at a Barnes and Noble yesterday - new books are seriously $$$!

The original “streaming service”…the public library! You can also read old books on Archive. My library (which I consider generally behind the times) will even let you check out a book electronically, so you don’t have to go to the library to pick it up or return it!!

Project Gutenberg has been wonderful when I want to read again classic books and don´t want to climb the stairs to the second floor of my house where I have them. I love to read again some of my favorites and I have the whole Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters. But although the therapist says I should climb a bit, I say I´ll do it tomorrow. So I read online. It has been a long time since I have bought a new book.

I LOVE your post about free books! I spent all day Sunday reading a book I have to return today. I spent the day yesterday reading a regular, old-fashioned library book. going to use the library all the time now instead of ebooks. Have the best beginning of the week you ever had!
