Upwork Came Crashing Down

I decided I needed to go back to Upwork. I used to do assignments there. I filled out the forms again but discovered they have a service fee. In other words, we have to pay them to write for them.
I remember years ago when I wrote there, the pay was not very good. People wanted you to write a huge amount for only a few dollars. For instance, write 10 1000-word articles for $5.
Do you work for Upwork? Do you earn enough over the service fee to make it worth while? Should I finish my application, pay the fee, and give it my best?
Every writing site has a reading or submission fee lately. Has writing become a racket now that there is AI to write articles?

@LadyDuck I think they have changed. I used to write for some great sites and they all went out of business. AI is going to destroy writers and writing jobs. If I could banish AI from the earth, I would. But we know it will go on and fill the world with bad writing.

I have a client in UpWork and my problem is the verification. They keep on asking for more IDs. I created my account a long time ago. I never heard of the service fee to sign up.

I had an account years ago. They wanted me to fill out the form for my job now. I don't have a professional writing job so had to start as a beginner. I had a client I worked for. I created PR pieces for various firms in England.
I also worked for a variety of content mills years ago. I wrote for Helium, Bubblews, Yahoo Voices, AC, and places I probably forgot. I also sold stories to national magazines and also wrote articles for a couple of Australian websites.
I thought verification was to prove who you are by a driver's license or other government forms. What is going on with that?

I am registered with Upwork but it has been a long time since I have gotten any work through them, I applied for a job recently and didn't even get a turn down just no answer whatsoever, The last list of job offers didn't even have anything I might apply for, -

@akalinus I have thought about it but due to my work schedule I have not taken up that offer from Upwork.

@Deepizzaguy I probably won't either. I don't want to pay someone to let me write for them, There are other ways and I just need to find the right one for me.

Hey there! I get where you're coming from; the service fee can be a bit of a bummer. Upwork has changed a bit over the years, and yeah, the pay rates can be a mixed bag. It really depends on the clients and gigs you land.
I'm not personally working for Upwork, but I've heard from others that success varies. Some folks find gigs that make the fee worth it, while others face challenges. It might be worth checking out the current landscape and weighing the pros and cons before diving back in.
And you're spot on about the reading or submission fees on other sites – it's a trend lately. With AI in the mix, things are evolving, but there's still room for human creativity and expertise. Give it some thought, weigh the options, and decide if it aligns with your goals. Good luck!

I wouldn't pay the fee. Good luck and have a great day.
