Sense of taste

Have you ever lost your sense of taste?
I did when I was going through chemo treatments a few months ago.
I wrote here about needing everything ice cold, even making rice krispy squares and eating them frozen.
It finally got better and food was tasting good. Now it's happening again.
I can only get down two or three bites of something. The strange thing is that I can eat sweets with no problem.
At first that was cool, I'm almost addicted to sweets. But it started a couple of weeks ago and I've lost about four pounds. And I know it's not healthy eating only sweets.
I've also just felt really bad. Not migraines, thank God.
Dale fried catfish today (my favorite) and I only ate two or three bites, three French fries and two bites of cornbread.
The weird thing to me is why is this happening again after finally getting better? I'm going to call my Oncologist tomorrow. I know chemo and radiation side effects can last a long time after treatments are over.
But I want to enjoy our Christmas Eve dinner with the family at Tammy's.
Please say a prayer that this will be better by then. I sure appreciate it. It seemed like a small problem at first, but it's becoming rather an issue.
There was no cure last time, so if this is from chemo, I guess I'll need to drink some Ensure until it goes away.
The aggravating thing is the weight never comes from the places I'd like it to.

Oh, I'm so sorry Feeling badly with little or no appetite isn't fun at all. Yes, I hope you do call the doctor very soon, and that you feel better and can enjoy your Christmas with your family.

It's one of ''those years'' one daughter staying in Florida at home with her family, and one son taking a turn at the in-laws. We did do a big houseful at Thanksgiving! And had so much fun. I will be able to see my one son who lives not far from me, and my oldest daughter and her husband, so I know I am fortunate to get to do that.

Thanks, Oshy. It probably is from the chemo again. Waiting for a call back from my Oncologist.
How's your back doing? Are you going to try acupuncture again?

That is odd that your taste has left you again.
I have little to no sense of smell, so the enticing aroma of foods cooking doesn't come into play for me.
It takes away from the pleasure of a meal, much like you without tasting it.
I pray that your taste returns.

@1creekgirl Keep us posted.
Being a friend of yours, I consider this to have been quite a wild ride since your diagnosis.
I cannot imagine how you and your family feel.

@1creekgirl You and your family have really been through so much, but like you say, God has been at your side the entire time. That makes it bearable.
I will hug the twins for you. They got their first baby dolls last Saturday (from Santa) at our family's Christmas party. Willow is so gentle and cares for her baby doll so sweetly, wrapping her and feeding her and rocking her to sleep. These little actions, that we think they do not notice, they really do, and they love those feelings so much that they mimic them.

I'm so sorry Vicki. Before I was diagnosed with depression, caused by an imbalance in my brain chemistry which was caused by a traumatic event, I could not stand the sight, smell or taste of any food. I was losing about 6-7 pounds a week. Is it possible for you? It could very well be the chemo, I suppose. Please let us know what the doctor says. Praying that something can be done for you. Hugs.

Oh my goodness! Bless your heart, I'm so thankful the doctors figured it out. Do you ever have problems with it now? Some people say, "Oh, just make yourself eat." They have no idea how impossible that is. I pray you never have to go through all that ever again.

@LindaOHio I went to my Oncologist, saw the FNP and she said it's not from chemo. She scheduled a CT scan and a nuclear bone scan for December 28 just to be sure it's not cancer related. I really think it's a gastro issue of some sort, but it's actually improving a little. I was able to eat a few bites yesterday and this morning. Yay!

@1creekgirl No, I'm quite a good eater except for the past couple of days. Do the doctors think it's caused by your chemo?

Aside from the occasional dullness of taste when I have had a cold, I have never completely lost my sense of taste. But surely that would be awful, especially considering how much I love food, and especially this time of the year when there are good eats galore.
I hope it goes away soon. That must be awful.

Thanks, Jim. I thought I was through with chemo side effects which is probably what this is. Chemo brain seems to be the gift that keeps on giving.

@porwest My FNP said today that chemo doesn't do this. She scheduled a couple of scans for after Christmas.

@1creekgirl I didn't even know that chemo had longer time side effects. I guess it does. Hopefully it corrects itself.

I noticed in your profile picture you have the Israeli flag with the American one. Thank you for that. I am sorry that food does not interest you. When I went on my weight loss journey and I reached the point that food did n ot matter and still not that interested in food. It is easy for me to fast because I used to get thirsty but now I can fast for as long as I need to without food and something to drink. I enjoy sweets too but I eat them in moderation and before I loved to snack a lot but now I drink instead in between meals. Good luck with it all and hope it all works out for you.

You are welcome. Our soldiers are still in Gaza and hope that they end our enemies and get our hostages back. We are still at war and sirens and explosions are happening and terrorists are still doing what they do. Thank you for your prayers. They are needed.
