Who is "They"?

How many times do we hear someone say, "They say.....?" It doesn't really matter what we are talking about, but someone always verbally points to "They." Who are "They?" I sometimes, just to be a bit antagonistic, I will ask that person who it is that they are referring to. Nobody has an answer. It always comes back to, "Well, you know, everyone?" That is because nobody knows who "They" are.
What do you think? Do you use this phrase a lot, sometimes, never? If you use the phrase, can you tell us who "They" are?

I think people use that when they are not confident, unsure ond indirect!!

Sounds like that could be true. Maybe unable to stand on their own opinions.

I'm thinking it covers whoever they
are talking about, the boss at work the
family member at home, who knows?
When I say THEY I'm talking about
all my Dr's rather I talked to 1 or 10
they MEANS people they deal with.
