Have You Ever Worn an Ugly Christmas Sweater?

Tis the season to be jolly and show off those great Christmas presents you received. Maybe one of them was an ugly Christmas sweater to wear for the holidays? I've never had an ugly Christmas sweater myself, although I have received a few sweaters some might consider ugly. How did the ugly "over the top" sweater craze get started anyway. They first got their start in the 1950's according to a few articles I read. Initially referred to as “Jingle Bell Sweaters," they weren’t as wild as today’s fashions, and unless you were Andy Williams doing a Christmas Special, were not very popular. It wasn’t until the 1980s that the item really hit its stride. They became fashionable in pop culture and in movies. You might remember the Chevy Chase character Clark Griswald doning one in "Christmas Vacation." After a slide in popularity in the 90's this tacky garment had a revival in the 2000's when wearing one at a Christmas party became the cool thing to do. Over the next decade this fuzzy expression of holiday cheer made its way into the fashion world, and it wasn't long before even celebrities and TV stars started sporting them. Seems the ugly Christmas sweater has found a place alongside lights and wrapping paper as a popular seasonal item. Hey, you could even argue they have replaced the nostalgic mistletoe of our grandparents in yule tide lore. So, would you trade in your mistletoe for an ugly Christmas sweater? Ever received one for a gift? What was the coolest looking ugly Christmas sweater you saw someone wearing? Perhaps you have a ugly sweater memory to share with us? Some Source Info- CNN

No, I've never had one. I'm too hot natured to wear one even if I wanted to. And I don't.

I guess we can put you down as a no on ugly sweaters More Interesting Christmas Sweater Facts: 1. The first known “ugly-sweater” party is thrown in Vancouver, Canada to raise money for a friend's cancer treatment. 2. There is an Ugly Sweater Day which is now celebrated on the 3rd Friday of Decemeber, perfect timing for those Christmas office parties, lol.

@LindaOHio Me too. Except when I'm hungry, have no food in the refrigerator, and need to go grocery shopping.

@dgobucks226 Well, where I grew up (Italy) I have never seen those ugly Christmas sweaters. People dressed elegant for Christmas. I remember my brother and my father (my husband later) sitting at the Christmas table wearing their full men suit, included the tie.

@LadyDuck I remember that too. No ties in our family but definitely dressed up. And going to mass on Christmas Eve. Back then everyone was more formally dressed.

I can't see it happening here as it's much too hot to wear sweaters. There are lots of Christmas T-shirts though. Some of them are pretty tacky.

I do not recall ever having an ugly Christmas sweater before in my lifetime before since the sweaters that are inside my home are solid colored sweaters.

I really wish I had an ugly Christmas sweater as I have always wanted one. I can’t really remember seeing one that stands out, but it does seem everyone these days has an ugly Christmas sweater party. I love the whole concept around it.

@dgobucks226 Looking back, those Bill Cosby sweaters were quite something. They were also the second most offensive thing he ever did.

True. Seems the weird patterns and bold colors on those sweaters caused them to be referred as ugly. More Interesting Christmas Sweater Facts: 1. It's funny you mention this today. When I went shopping earlier, it seemed like EVERYONE was wearing their ugly sweater (is it that day or something?). I never had one and don't ever want one . My son said he saw someone wear one with a mirror on it .
