I probably should not have read this report in the NYT before breakfast, but read it I did. Some days I lose my faith in mankind, I really do. I'm not going to go into the rights and wrongs of what one side is doing to the other. What I fail to understand, every time I read reports like these, is WHAT these males (they are not men for sure) were taught and brought up to be by their parents, their religious instructors and other so-called mentors. In a book by Pieter Niesewand one of the characters said that men should go into war naked. They would be so afraid of getting it shot off, that nobody will fire the first shot in the war. That is maybe an answer. I think a better answer is to ask ourselves WHAT it is these people have been taught. If somebody has at any point in your life tried to teach you that another human being is an untermensch, a dog, a heathen, a kafir, a slave or whatever other noun you want to use in the place of human being, then you MUST ask serious questions about the teacher. These males were some woman's little boy at some time in their lives. They were pupils in schools and received schooling. They presumably had so-called religious leaders who gave them so-called morality. But after all of that, how is it that these boys were never taught these 4 very simple life lessons? : 1. Despite what some old man who strode off into the desert centuries ago may have thought in his delirium, a woman is not a man's property, is not disgusting, should not be hit, is not merely a sperm receptacle and is not an object to be feared and that lust is not a one-way street; 2. A woman's body is sacrosanct, period; 3. You do not touch any other human being without express permission. No human's body is yours to own, demean, visit violence on or make like you want to with; 4. By using dehumanising other people, you give yourself the right to do as you please to them. View every human being as just that: a human being, then perhaps you can live in peace with your neighbour. 3 000 years on and still some people behave like beasts. 3 000 years on and some people still cannot leave a woman alone to just be. 3 000 years on and still mothers cannot teach their boys simple life lessons. 3 000 years and still fathers cannot teach their sons the value of self-discipline. 3 000 years on and "religious leaders" still think it is good to poison the minds of young males in exchange for lucre. 3 000 years on and still old men seeking to boost their ego's, send young men to war to die on the altar of some stupid ideal. 3 000 years of so-called education, religion and morality has brought these people to do this, what a vile indictment of the quality of the ideas humanity has put into young people's heads. Don't worry, I also had to learn those easy things from sources other than my own parents, my church and my school, I was also taught for many years to view whole swathes of the human race through the eyes of misogyny, race, religion, sexual preference and political affiliation and to the pass judgement on them and the worthiness of their lives. Maybe the internet, smartphones and a 24 hour news cycle has one benefit - it brings these horrible people and what they do, into the light for all of humanity to see. And the more we see of these horrible humans and their horrible ways and the more we understand that their horrible deeds are not ever justifiable, the more we can shun them and hopefully eventually start ignoring them. I cannot ignore what they do, but I sure as can be ignore them when they open their mouths, speak their filth and ignoring their stupid justifications for whatever unspeakable horror they have visited upon another. This I think is the only way I can even begin to restore some faith in mankind.
