Staying Young

I was an adult figure skater and had many adult friends who were rink rats like me. We practically lived at the ice skating rinks.
One of the things we would often say was that skating kept us young. That being at the rink, on the ice and in the cold, "preserved" us .
Do you think there is any truth to that ? Is it the cold or warmth that actually keeps any of us "young"?

I’m sure that all of the physical activity of ice skating definitely played a part in staying young. So you began skating as an adult or did you do any skating as a child ?

@much2say I roller-skated too, but I never ice-skated. I never was great at it, because of my poor vision.

@Tampa_girl7 Ah, did you have vision issues since your childhood? I never got to ice skate as a child, although my cousin was a figure skater from early on . . . it never dawned on me to even try!

Funny words- the rink rats ! I think there is something in that. Skating goes a long way towards improving blood circulation, which takes years off you.

I wish I could skate now, but life has taken over. I will tell you that since we talked about acupressure, I am also now into tai chi - through videos for now. I am hoping my mom will take a class with me sometime this year. I understand that tai chi is about body circulation and flow . . . that totally makes sense!

@changjiangzhibin89 There are some Chinese communities scattered around Los Angeles. When my daughter was taking her art class on Saturdays, I used to walk in surrounding areas in these Chinese communities . . . many parks had morning tai chi sessions outdoors. I wish our local parks had that. I can feel the benefits . . . and maybe now I count as an elderly person .

Yes I absolutely do..I take a freezing cold shower every day..so it does work.
Or I would surely have passed away by now.
I do love the ice skating so much. My favorite..that and any snow sports and swimming.
Would love to see you skating.

I have heard cold showers are healthier for us . . . that's great you do that!!
I do love to skate . . . if only I didn't have this bum knee now . . . or maybe I'll have to test it out.
Let's go skating . . . I wish I could try it on a real frozen pond !

@RebeccasFarm Ah, you hung out at the rink! I only went maybe once a year . . . all the other days of the year I was outside on the sidewalk . I think I would still be able to skate, but I'd really have to be careful.

I doubt that it's either one of those. I think that doing things we enjoy and doing our best to live stress free keeps us young to a point.
Also, are we young mentally or physically? I've found that every few to ten years something new seems to crop up to impact me adversely physically, but I'm able still feel fairly young.
I prefer warmer weather but most of my life I've lived in States with winter weather.

Right - it's more about our lifestyles . . . not the temps that any of us live in. We will all inevitably get older no matter where we live .
State of mind counts for a lot - even if our bodies change as we age.
My late father in law grew up in super cold NH . . . as soon as he could, he moved out to warm CA for good! I'm all for warm/hot weather too.

@much2say I lived in Keene, NH for one year and found it too be similar to Michigan weather where I live.
My favorite states were CT and NC. It wasn't warm in CT but our house was only a couple of blocks from the water. We spent a lot of time walking on the beach.

@much2say You're welcome. It's going OK. I'm really behind here today though. I'd normally be done in the morning; and here it is 5:30 pm.

I think being active and around friends and family are both things that help us keep feeling young.

I think it's a whole lot more about attitude, if you think young and try to keep up with whatever it is you enjoy then surely you'll stay younger. Soooo, when you say 'young' do you mean as a teen or just younger than your age.

Not sure but I heard and shown in the science fiction movies, that if you put yourself in the cryo chambers, you won't get old.
