Fitness ritual ... to do or not to do...

Been a tad busy...actually very. After Dad's stroke, a lot of work has cascaded down on me. Things he would lend a hand with mostly. Made me realize how invaluable he has been. Anyway, this morning I was reading that supplement on fitness, and Marathon, and some deaths. I am 65. Dad is 90. Neither of us have been rich enough to go to gymnasiums. I do have an exercise bike, cheap one, but it is not used as often as it should. I am fat and flabby. I love to eat. I love to cook Indian food. I love ice creams. Whatever... I have not exercised much. A little bit of sports here and there in my life. That it. So at 65 I am looking at Bruce Willis. The guy exercised. He maintained his health. Why on earth did he have to have dementia? Vanny and her usual inverted convoluted logic says....all those fitness professionals are taking us for a ride. Our genes decide whether we will be fit or not. At whatever age. Whatever we eat. Whether we exercise or not. So help me with this research.... if you can. I find myself composed when I think of god and my responsibilities... there are folks I would like to box but I hold myself back thinking then who would look after dad, after all, the next step is behind the bars. Not a sane way to be composed but ...it works for me. Then I end up making deals with god....I have this strange relationship with Saibaba... it is like I go to his shop and buy something or barter. I tell him I want this, I will give you this for it, 90 percent of time, it works...my end of the deal, I dilly dally...still this relationship works...kinda, running credit account in some shop. I clear the previous dues and get next favor type..LOL On the whole, this approach helps to keep me somewhat calm. So why do I need to exercise? And do you think all those who exercise are calm folks? I don't think so. I have heard them issue life threats...i.e., the ones who went to gym. God knows what they were doing there...I didn't verify. So all of you...do you think those Jane Fonda routines are really necessary or humbug....are they making fools of us like those fashionistas.... I prefer eating what I like...kinda, never know whether Putin will attack India...and I will be his first victim.

I seem to have missed something. When did your dad have a stroke? I try to walk everyday to keep my weight down. But I am prediabetic and don't want to let it get worse. I love to eat too.

5th Jan, 2022. 5th Jan is JJ's birthday. Anyway, I had plenty of running around to do. Dad did not complete many things or did not undertake things which were essential and have been tackling them one at a time. I am prediabetic too. :( Hope they find some medicines for all of us soon so that we can eat without worrying.

@vandana7 So sorry. Hope you get everything straightened out. No matter how hard we try there always seems to be something not done. That would be nice. I keep mine sort of under control by not letting myself gain more

I did not know you Dad had a stroke, I am very sorry Vanny. You know, we cannot know what life is preparing for us. My husband is an incredibly intelligent man, but he is totally losing his short term memory. He can remember nothing, he asks me the same questions a dozen times every hour. I would have never imagine that this would have happened to him.

I too am losing my marbles Anna. Keeping myself active...I wonder if exercises help in retaining memory. I know one uncle who used to walk so fast, but by the time he was 80, he had become simply too incoherent. Comparatively, Dad is still ok. So exercises and memory are not interlinked. Hope they find some medication to improve memory so that we can use it and not trouble others.

@vandana7 Exercise and memory are not interlinked. My husband was very good in sports, he still walks a lot, but this is not helping. My Mom reached the 96 without a memory problem, it was the same for her mother and her grandmother. I am pretty sure that is genetic.

Dad is not poor...he is enjoying getting all his work done by me...except pee and poop cleaning.....as yet...I am poor me, because I end up doing his laundry, and he does not wear diapers because he feels they poke him. Poor me...sigh..LOL...but I guess we all have such needs sometime. Lucky me, he had a stroke at 88. Many have had it before, and their ordeal has been much more, when the person is bedridden. I feel god has given me only what I can take care of. You to take care Barbara. :)

I go for the 'moderation in all things' approach. I don't think it's necessary to run marathons or go crazy in the gym (and overdoing things can end up damaging your joints anyway), but there's no doubt that regular exercise is better than sitting about. Just walking is one of the best types of exercise, and if you have any place like some countryside or a park where you can go and see growing things, it's good for your mental health too, as is just being out and about and saying 'hello' to people.

Yes, walking is a lot better than going to gym. I do not understand why people go to gym at all. Other than to be in shape, if their profession demands. Working out like that, SMH. I do climb three floors, about 4 times each week. LOL That is about it...walking daily ...whenever I am thinking, I am walking...kinda, if I am planning any routine, I gotta walk. If I am planning money, I gotta walk. I cannot do it sitting...even if I do it, I like to mull over it, before I finalize, which means walk. We do not have countryside where I stay...:( Concrete jungle....park is filled with unsocial elements and activities.

You need to exercise to help in your blood circulation and prevent a stroke. Dementia is a brain condition not body.

True. But I would want exercises to prevent that. What is the point in living long without the brain functioning right and blowing top on every person for no good reason?

I am sorry to hear about your Dad. You see it is your own will if you want to go for exercise or not. It is entirely up to you. You could try some yoga exercises while sitting or lying on the bed. You can try some Mudra, while sitting. This will help you to some extent.

I think the fact that I have exercised al my life has helped my health. And of course smoking has kept me from getting Covid so far. No self-respecting virus would want anything to do with my lings.

I am not sure it is exercises that have helped with your health. It maybe your genes. You need to find 10 people who have exercised and are in your age group, and another cohort of 10 who have not exercised and are in your age group. Then get their health profiles to know whether exercises really help or is it their attitude or genes.

I'm sorry your dad had a stroke. It's the first time you mentioned it. When did it happen? I don't follow famous people's exercise programs. I do my own exercising, and yes, I exercise every day. It works. I'm losing weight. Do what's best for you.

I can empathize with your desire to eat what you want. I feel at my age I've earned that right! BUT I truly must lose weight. I'm unable to exercise; but I think that those that do "Hooray for them!". There are some people that never gain a pound throughout their entire lives. I dislike those people. Their genetic code is not like mine. I look at food and gain weight. Have a good day.
