Do people really leave their wallets in trolleys while shopping?

Apparently some shoppers in the California leave their wallets unattended in shopping carts while they shop or they shop with open purses (presumably that means handbags).
I came across this report. I think it might be a cultural habit from where I grew up, but there is no way on this green earth I will ever leave my wallet in a trolley and then wander around perusing the aisles for goods to buy. My wallet sits in my pocket and sees the light day only when I am ready to pay, never before.
Is this carelessness or is it just a culture where people are absolutely not used to any crime?

Yep, where we are now, neither, but it really takes some getting used to. I was very surprised that people just leave their bags, umbrellas, coats at the shop entrance and nobody even looks at it. Where we are from, that is is gilded invitation

I have seen MANY people not with wallets in the cart, per se, but definitely with purses that contain them. It's a dumb idea. Thieves are everywhere. I would almost go as far to say if you leave something like that unattended, you deserve to have it stolen.

In my part of CA, if one is not aware of "crime", oh then they must be completely oblivious. Even though I grew up in a decent area, my parents have always taught me to "watch my back" . . . I've heard the horror stories from when they lived in a worse part of L.A. and things were stolen from them. For me, by now, it's just habit to be vigilant. I keep everything on me . . . I don't leave any invitation, like an unattended purse on a cart . . . one needs to think steps ahead of another who may steal. But not everyone thinks like this.
That being said, I know Trader Joes (the store chain mentioned). People feel casual and relaxed in there . . . the employees are nice . . . there could be a false sense of being safe in there. I know of cases in our local TJs where crimes like this have happened.

I do sometimes put my purse in shopping carts when I get to get something out of my purse, but I always pick it back up.

It is careless because you never know who could walk by. I probably have done it, but have never really lived in a high crime area.
