Howdy from Hot Springs, Arkansas! I went to Warm Springs, Georgia last year…guess Boiling Springs is next! Before I head to the national park I’ll give you the first of the ten most personally significant losses because of plane crashes. Your music tastes may vary. #10: John Denver Yeah, I know. Comedian Dennis Blair spoofed him with a parody of “Annie’s Song”: “My songs make me nauseous like a Doris Day movie.” But he was, at heart, a folkie who just added a little pop and country to the mix. Denver’s career begin as the replacement for Chad Mitchell in the Chad Mitchell Trio. Randy Sparks, the founder of the New Christy Minstrels (he passed away this week ), told John that Deutschendorf wouldn’t look good — or fit, for that matter — on a handbill or the theater sign, so John changed his last name to Denver. Before he became a star on his own with the 1971 hit “Take Me Home, Country Roads” (one of two official state songs of West Virginia) he gained success as the writer of Peter, Paul, and Mary’s hit “Leaving on a Jet Plane.” Oh, the irony. Denver was a licensed pilot (typical story on this countdown). However, because he had a string of drunk driving tickets his pilot’s license had been suspended. Legally, he shouldn’t have even been in a plane on October 12, 1997. Denver was practicing touch-and-go landings in an experimental plane, the homemade Rutan Long-EZ. (Yes, you actually can build homemade aircraft! Look online, you’ll see a mess of ‘em that you could build at home.) The plane ran out of fuel. Because of the peculiar area where the fuel switch was, Denver had to take his eyes off the controls and find the switch (located behind the seat…who designed that??? ). He lost control and crashed into the bay. At just 53 years of age, Denver was the second-oldest person on this entire month’s list. That shows you the wide scope of talent we’ve lost in the skies. John Denver Born Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr. December 31, 1943 - October 12, 1997 (age 53) Place of crash: Monterey Bay near Pacific Grove, California Hey, I like this song! (Linda? No! See the fiddle??? )

@LindaOHio — I hate to ask this, but have they checked him for a “serious medical condition” instead of just focusing on if he’d had a stroke or has dementia?

@FourWalls I have to thank you for your post. I asked Alexa to play John Denver songs while I was doing some things around the house. Timeless for sure and so many I had forgotten about.

One of my all-time favorite songs is Doris Day’s “Secret Love,” which was from a movie. But it was a funny line.

@FourWalls I love her movie with Rock Hudson, "Pillow Talk." He was a womanizer, who provoked Doris on their party-line telephone. This movie is a hilarious love story!

Hey. I like this song too. In fact, not sure if it will be surprising or not, I am a HUGE John Denver fan. Here's something that might blow your ears if you happen to be a big fan too, but I can't help but share. And NO myLot, it's NOT monetized, so don't you DARE take it down or else. In fact, John Denver's estate get any money from this. It got copyright struck. lol

I loved John Denver...I guess he appealed to my hippie side (which I am told I still have!). I was a little girl when Patsy Cline passed away in that plane accident. One of my grandmothers absolutely loved the song ''Crazy'' and I like it too. Grandma was sad, she said Patsy had a lot to offer as an outspoken woman.

Patsy (who’ll be along on the countdown later) was a trailblazer. She was one of the first women to wear slacks in an era when it was strictly dresses; and most people said she could cuss a sailor under the table.

@FourWalls I think she would have been very interesting to know. You're right, she was a trailblazer, and most definite in her opinions.

I do, too. The news was that it was “missing,” then it was “his plane” but they didn’t know if he was actually on it.

I like it when there's cakes on the griddle. Whew!!! And I love a good fiddle That was sad when his marriage ended with Annie. He had walked away from a previous airplane mishap in 1989. Guess luck was not with him in 1997.

Short stack at IHOP! He crash landed in 1989, refused medical treatment, and got on another plane. Nothing slowed him down!
