My rent is going up by $50

I currently pay $1375/month for a 2 bedroom apartment. There is an extra $60 tacked on to the base $1315 rent because I am like the only shmuck around here who actually is honest and pays the pet fee.
Anyway my downstairs neighbor who has the same size apartment as me had her rent raised by $100 when it was time for her to renew her lease. She is nosy and knows everything about anything that happens around here. She told me that the head maintenance guy told her that everyone's rent was going up $100 this year.
So I was bracing for that. I was genuinely surprised when I opened up the letter that it is only going up $50. I don't understand what the difference is between my downstairs neighbor and me. I saw a letter on the door of the couple across from this apartment. The next time I cross paths with one of them I will ask how much their rent went up. With my luck the answer will be $25.

My rent is going up $100 in May. We are still paying less then most peoole in this area but our building is starting to get run down because the landlord does nothing for upkeep. They dont even live in the same province.

That is a shame. This is basically the cheapest rent in the area aside from super sketchy places filled with gangsters. They do a good job of keeping things maintained IMO. They also are very good when I need them to fix something. I don't give them a hard time, am respectful, and am grateful so the way they respond to my issues can be very different from what they do for others who are rude to them.

@NJChicaa kindness can go a long way. I wish they were better fixing thungs here but my rent is pretty good so I dont like to complain. I wouldnt be able to find another place for what we pay.

In Ontario they put a stop to out of province owners renting properties.
Our son scooped a decent house that a buyer still owned since he built it in 2009.
He basically had to sell as he lives in BC.
But he did not keep up the house, and there has been so many 'fixes' that my hubs has done for the kids since they moved in last spring.

I could rent you the upper part of my house (with 3 bedrooms) for less than 1/2 or what you are paying. In a good neighborhood too.

Many landlords in our area charge a security deposit if you have pets. That way they are covered if the pet does any damage. I am thankful that we own our own home. My cats like to scratch the molding on the doors.

Maybe they gave you a break because you pay on time, etc.? Have a good day.

All the rentals here where I live, that I am familiar with, charge a pet deposit of at least $25 per month, per pet. I think it's fairly standard to charge a pet deposit.
My rent went up in January, it always does. So fun!

Maybe because you are honest about the cats.

I take it that the rent increases are not a percentage of what you are already paying.
And of course that would depend on when you moved in, as here the landlords can increase the base rate for a unit when someone moves out, and then there will always be the percentage increases annually.
I did not know that they could charge extra for pets, parking yes, but pets I wasn't aware of.

Best of luck to you with the rent. At least you have a job to cover it but it seems a lot to pay for an apartment. I probably could not manage anything more than a studio if even that,
