Prices have really gone up

I went to my local Russian store and prices for some things were outrageous.
Dill was selling for $4.99. No way am I paying that much for dill. I can live without it.
The eggs I usually buy went up from $3.99, which isn't cheap at all, to $4.59. And these were the cheapest brown eggs in the store. I am out of eggs so I bought them.
Bell pepper was $4.99 per pound. Decided not to get it and got one cubanelle pepper instead, selling at $3.49 / pound. That's not cheap either but still better than paying the bell pepper price.
A liter of olive oil was selling for $16.99 and up depending on brand. What gives with these olive oil prices? I've noticed that at Trader Joe's where I usually get my oil. It used to sell under $10 for one liter and now all varieties are over $10. And Home Goods oil prices (I buy oil there too sometimes) are very high too. That is just crazy. I still have some olive oil left so didn't get any. And I probably wouldn't have gotten any regardless. It's too much.
These were just some of the things I noticed at the Russian store. I am sure there are other things that have drastically gone up in price too.
I don't drive so I don't really have the option of shopping around for the best deals. And it's not worth it to spend a long time commuting to other stores for a few items. It only makes sense if I have a lot of things to buy.

@lovebuglena It is the same here, because there is a new wave of avian flu now.

Many probably can’t afford such high prices.

Prices are crazy for sure. I do go around to various stores, but these days I have to be ultra about what I buy no matter what. Cooking oil is very high . . . as Marie was explaining why. I have been digging in places like Grocery Outlet for any better deal than Trader Joe's (my usual too), but nope - all are high. I go to Asian markets, and many of the imported stuff have gone up (well, has been since the pandemic) - so I just have to wait for sales - I can live without these things too.

@lovebuglena We don't have Lidl here, but I should check Aldi too. I did see in various places they had olive oil blends (olive oil mixed with other oils or flavors) . . . some of that was cheaper, but I don't like to use that.

Wow! I wonder how much Lidl is selling oil for. Haven't looked there.

@much2say I’ve never tried those blends. Not sure I would, especially if it has canola oil.

I've always found speciality stores like that a bit pricey. However, I do understand the cost of living has gone insane. Reguardless of where I need to go, since George isn't driving, it's fifteen dollars. (Usually a lot more) The cost of living feels out of control.

Even in supermarkets olive oil prices are through the roof. Some "sale" prices for olive oil shouldn't even be regular prices.

You end up spending a lot yet what you bought is not much.

You can walk out of a grocery with one or two little sacks and think...how could this have been so much?? What can I do differently to save $? I cook from scratch for the most part...I am constantly thinking of different good recipes for the ingredients I have or ingredients I have found on a good sale, I truly do strive to cook good tasting meals that are healthy on a budget. It is HARD.

I try to check on what items might be going way up in price. Olive oil production is way, way down, as Mediterranean crops have had several growing seasons way too hot, and didn't have the harvest they usually do. It is projected to go even higher than it is already. So if you really, really want some, you might want to get it now...and yes, prices are nuts.

I may have to go back to Trader Joe's. At least there olive oil prices are slightly lower. I did not know there was an issue with olive oil production.

@MarieCoyle I've never bought olive oil in metal jugs. Seems like they are harder to use. And I haven't seen them for a long time. I don't buy plastic bottles either. Usually buy glass bottles.

I have read several news articles on the high prices of it, as well as they do not think this harvest season will be any cooler or provide any more olives than it has for the last few years. About a month ago, my son in law found a good buy on one gallon metal containers of a name brand, on Amazon, and he bought it. It arrived and he decided he would get one more for whoever in the family needed it, but the price had shot way, way up, so he got another jug of it at Costco.

@MarieCoyle things seem to going downhill. And then there’s inflation. If there’s room at home makes sense to look for sales and stock up on things, even if we don’t need them now.

I have read news articles and heard on television that once food goes up in price, it never goes back to where it was. It may go down somewhat, but it it’s still not going back to where it was. Lower quantities due to weather, supply chain issues, increased transportation costs, and higher labor, not to mention we have wars going on, people are struggling to afford food all over the world now. It’s very concerning.

@lovebuglena You could advocate for a higher minimum wage, but then some would complain it's bad for small businesses. And I get ticked off when wages increase for "unskilled" jobs but don't increase for "skilled" jobs. I didn't get an education "just" to save the world!

That is not good at all. Prices increase but salaries do not. People can’t afford to pay way more for things they need.

@MarieCoyle I buy sugar in the raw. Our supermarket sells a big bag of it for $8.99. Don’t remember how many pounds. Definitely less than ten.

@aninditasen Yes. We have a big subway system in four of the boroughs of NYC. In my borough though (5th one) there is no subway but we do have a train. They actually call it a railway. And we have local and express buses too in NYC. And a few ferries.

The Russian owners of the grocery store had to raise prices so they could send money to Putin to help fund the war in Ukraine.

@TheHorse I don't eat pork so not sure on its price here. We buy Turkey bacon or beef bacon and try to do it when it's on sale. Unless we really want it.

IF what I hear is coming I'd stack up on things where
things won't be found on the shelves, cause food &
all kinds of Items are going to be hard to get, why?
cause when truck drivers aren't going into Ny stores
are going to be running out of everything, it's coming.
