Years ago, when I lived in Northern Virginia, I went with a friend to a restaurant called Carmellos. It was awesome. I had some kind of stuffed pasta, maybe manicotti or something..but it was so good. It literally melted in my mouth. Unfortunately, I was only there once..but that meal really sticks out in my mind. It seems like so many of the best restaurants are Italian. I can think of another one I really liked. I am going to google to see if Carmellos is still there. I just googled, it only has 4 stars..how can that be? Maybe they are under new management..or some very fussy person rated them badly.

I cannot say that I can mention one "best restaurant", because it depends what I ordered. For fish the best restaurant I tried was on the French Riviera, in Villefranche "La Trinquette". For meat it is a restaurant in the French part of Switzerland "Taverne du Valais - Charbonnade & Steakhouse". For pasta definitely Italy, da Morino in Orvieto, near Tuscany.

You have to pick one overall favorite. Those are the rules... Although I know different places have different outstanding attributes like atmosphere or food, or excel at different things..It is closed now Thanks to Covid, but a place near friend used to have an outstanding Brunch. They win the award for that. It was called Paradiso which I assume is Paradise in Italian, and it was.

@snowy22315 In this case I would pick up "Da Morino" in Italy. I do not even know if it still exists he had the 3 Stars Michelin that are the highest recognition for a restaurant.
Yes Paradiso means Heaven, I think that Paradise is more in a religious term.

@LadyDuck I bet it is still there..although it could be under new ownership. The Kapok tree winner for atmosphere though..is no longer there. I think they went bankrupt or something.

We used to get the best steak sandwiches ever made, at Grandpa Tony's in Bay City, Michigan. The steak was cooked on the grill, right in front of a customer's face. I'd love to have one this week, but that restaurant is closed down. Darn it! and Little Chef made the best hamburgers, they are closed also.

@snowy22315 Grandpa Tony's was open for over 40 years in Bay City! They had a well-known reputation, for excellent food:)

They don't have to be elite..just the one that was best to you.Not all places that have great food are fancy.

@snowy22315 I experienced some things in Chicago that I have not been able to duplicate since. But I am quite happy with my Thai and Mexican foods here.

Our favorites are all chains...Red Lobster and Longhorn Steakhouse are our favorites. Olive Garden would come in third. Have a great weekend.

Thanks, the ones I have liked the best are not chains. Chains are all moderate restaurants in my opinion. Nothing stellar there.

@LindaOHio I suppose it depends on how far you want to drive. We have more of the individually owned places here than chains..and most are good.

@snowy22315 Unfortunately we have very few "regular" restaurants...and they aren't particularly good.

And it's quite expensive. A small cup of tea is $5.

It had to be last summer when I went to the First Americans museum with my best friend. They had a fine dining restaurant in the museum, using ingredients and recipes the First Americans would have used. It cost more than I’ve ever paid for a meal, but it was amazing. My friend actually took her mother there the following week for her birthday.

I’d say the Stockyard in Nashville. It was owned by Buddy Killen. Unbelievable prime rib.

The best restaurant that I've been to was called The Tree Room.
It was part of a large family-owned complex in the city that we used to live in.
They had a hotel, a disco, a saloon, a daycare, and some other attractions including swimming pools, tennis, racquetball courts, and so on.
The Tree Room gained its name when the family decided to have an addition of a fancy restaurant to be added to the sprawling business. There was a tree that they needed to take down, but it sparked controversy in the community so they built around it and decorated it with pretty mini lights.
They had the very best Canadian food offered on their menu. My favorite meal was filet mignon, and it would melt in your mouth.
I loved the food, the service and the atmosphere and the story behind it.
My Dad was friends with the owner and my Grandpa would take all of the family to The Tree Room every year in September. My cousins and I just loved going there every year.

It sounds like a special place. I don't remember the food being fantastic, but there used to be a famous restaurant in Florida called The Kapok Tree. It was really elaborate. My grandparents were there one time when Tony Bennet came in.

One of my very favorite meals at a restaurant was in Holland, but in a Turkish restaurant. It was a delicious meal. I don’t recall the name of the restaurant. It was in the early 80’s.

Yes, one of the ones I really liked I don't remember the name of either. I might be able to find it if it is still around though.
