This was a first in 23 years of teaching

Today I was teaching the bio students about dihybrid crosses (genetics) and how to do the big 16-box Punnett squares. It is easiest to actually just draw everything out on the whiteboard rather than trying to describe it all via diagrams in a powerpoint presentation. My 7th period class can be easily distracted and chatty but generally well mannered. (unlike my 2nd period class)
Anyway I was up at the board drawing the ginormous Punnett square for a dihybrid cross. My back was to the students for a couple of minutes because I was filling in all of the boxes. All of a sudden one of the little *#(%*&* whipped a pencil at my head. Their aim sucks because they missed and it hit the board next to my head and bounced off.
NEVER in my 23 years of teaching has a student thrown something at me like that. I don't know who did it but I do know what side of the room it came from. I was hoping that a student would stay after class or email me to tell me who did it but I'm not expecting that because like the #1 teenager motto is "snitches get stitches".
So at this point there is nothing I can do about it other than never turning my back on them again. Fine with me. Going forward I'll just use the slides which aren't as effective as them seeing me do the problems in real time. Good job guys!

Guess it has to happen eventually. You know most parents don't parent their kids. I'm glad it missed and the student had poor aim.

@NJChicaa Hey, I don't blame you. When I was a student, I had stuff thrown at me right in front of the teachers. Kids get away with way to much stuff.

I wish you did have cameras in your classroom. I am so sorry that happened. Teaching school is just way harder than many people realize.

That is so disrespectful but I am not surprised it happened. Nothing surprises me about some of these students now a days.

That is extremely dangerous..what if you had turned just right and it hit your eye.

That's awful. I don't understand why some students have no respect for authority figures.

Sorry to learn that a student treated you that way.

Use your 20+ years of experience to find the weakest link and get them to tell you who did it
Then find a legitimate way to f them up
In any group there's a weakest link that wants to tell the teacher!!!

@NJChicaa I was on probation for a year...my probation officer manipulated me by using disappointment against me as she knew I respected her.
Disappointment is a great tool.
Get the same class, say what happened and say that you liked and respected them but obviously they don't feel the same about you.
Tell them that throwing something at you has made you feel really bad and maybe unsafe...maybe you'll add to it but you'll hopefully get someone admitting to it if you give them some wriggle room.

@Mike197602 I would never let students think that they upset me.

Such disrespect. Some parents just aren't doing a good job of raising their children. Have a good day in spite of all this.
