What can I say? Social Security is a slow-working agency, such as it seems most US government agencies are. I am still awaiting the confirmation letter of my changing benefits amount. It started out on Feb 12th as to be a 2 week wait. Then on their website it said, and still says today that the normal wait is 2 to 4 weeks. Today is 3 days into the 5th week. So, I called them and now today I was told that everything the others told me, along with the website is wrong. It is a 60 day wait! The lady said that even though the website says 2 to 4 weeks, that is just the first part of it and it actually will be a 2 month wait! Why can't people tell you these things in the first place? Don't they understand that people make plans according to what they are being told?
The owners of the house are still waiting for me as of today. I let the realtor know what is happening, so once he communicates that to the owners, they may change the status of the house and go ahead with the other offers they have as my offer is not formal until I get that letter and get my loan approved according to that letter. I really do not want to lose the house as it seems to be perfect for my needs and desires.
In the meantime, beginning March 1st there is a grant in Ohio that applicants can receive $20K for a downpayment. But those grants go quickly and there are only so many. This delay complicates things in that if those grants are gone before I get my letter, so is my downpayment. Then I have to apply for loans through different methods. The grant process itself can take up to another month once I apply. Going through other methods will also take more time. It now could be several more months before I get to move. Crazy! This is what happens when someone tells you with authority that something will take 2 weeks when it actually takes 2 months!
However, with all of this, I know that God's timing is perfect, and that everything will fall into place in His time. Believe me, as much waiting as I have had to do in my life, patience is still not my best feature. So, I am praying that my patience grows through this test of faith and trust. I also know that I have released this all to God, and that if this house is not the right one for me, no matter how it looks right now, He will provide the best option for me also in His time.

That's a shame that Social Security made you lose out on a house. If and when I do buy another house, I am going to do my best to pay in full with the proceeds of this house, so I don't have to deal with that nonsense. However, if it would be a condo it could require some sort of guarantee on the condo fees.

@capirani Can't you just go into a social security office and ask for a letter? They should be able to work up something for you. Or if you have a letter at home explaining your new benefit amount..shouldn't that work?

@snowy22315 Right now I can get the letter for what I receive now. But they are processing my surviving spouse benefits. I cannot get a letter for that until they finish. That is what I have been waiting for. And what they said would take 2 weeks, then up to 4 weeks, and now 60 days.

I am sorry to hear about your troubles. Maybe you can offer to pay the house in two parts: a part now and a part after 60 days? I don't know... just a suggestion, thinking of alternatives

It does not work that way. I have to get a loan to buy the house and have my offer accepted. I cannot even make a formal offer until I get the letter. I cannot get the loan until I get the letter. Not to mention I have no money to pay now and pay later. I have to wait.

@andreea_v The squeaky wheel gets the grease. I have called a couple times, but I am going to keep calling.

@capirani I am sorry it is so complicated and takes so much time :(
My advice would be to insist, sometimes people who call frequently to ask about something, people tend to solve their issue so they don't call again

Those are income verification letters and you can actually download it or have it mailed to you. However, this is different. Right now I can get the letter for what I receive now. But they are processing my surviving spouse benefits. I cannot get a letter for that until they finish. That is what I have been waiting for. And what they said would take 2 weeks, then up to 4 weeks, and now 60 days.

When we bought our house, we had a lot of waiting to do ourselves.

@capirani I don't blame you. George and I felt the same way when we bought our house. And, we're thankful everyday to have it.

Totally understand the frustration! Social Security sounds like a nightmare. Here's hoping for a miracle with the letter and that perfect house waits for you.
