Memories of St Patrick's Day

It’s St Pat’s Day and it brings back memories of the first cabaret I ever went to. Cabarets were a big deal with the young folk in my home town. The town hall would be divided into ‘logues’ which sat around 8-10 people; you took along snacks and drinks and danced the night away to a groovy band.
The cabaret was ‘formal wear’ and the girls would all wear ballgowns while the lads wore suits or maybe even a tux. The night would be talked about for weeks both before and after.
I was invited to the St Pat’s cabaret by Vince who, at that time, was a staunch Catholic as were many of our ‘set’. At that time, Catholics weren’t to eat meat on a Friday or until after they’d been to Mass. But, on St Pat’s Day, the priest exempted his parishioners from these rules so they could have sausage rolls and other goodies at the cabaret. Which leads me to ponder just how important was such a ruling – but that’s a subject for another discussion, or not.
You’ve seen the photo before but it fits. Vin and I just about to head out to the ball.

This is a great picture, it captures the mood of anticipation of a great evening ahead of you, and all of the preparations that got you to that point.
I was raised as an RC and my family was very strict.
Even as a child, I was not allowed to have anything to eat until after I had received Holy Communion at mass, but as I grew the rules of the church changed and eventually I was allowed to eat but not within an hour's time of receiving the Holy Communion. That meant that less people were fainting in church, especially in the hot summer months.

Omg yes! I grew up Catholic and we weren’t allowed to eat anything before receiving the host aka “the body of Christ”. This was back in the 90s for us.

The Cabarets sounded like a lot of fun for people at the time. Probably brings back some nice memories for a lot of people as well as what you have shared here from your experience. The beliefs of some religions are just weird to me. I love the dark gloves you wore in the photo.
