Just keep smiling

I’m not sure how to explain this without giving away too many personal details, but basically I wanted to change an account I hold for my daughter at a building society into something else with the same provider. This course of action was actually suggested by a member of their staff a while ago, and it seemed like a good idea. I went into the branch last week and asked if I could carry out this plan, but the staff that day obviously didn’t think I should do it. They tried every which way to put me off, telling me it would take a lot of time, two visits, I would have to book an appointment and find all kinds of documentation for us both etc etc. Well I just kept smiling and said ‘OK, how do I book it?’ They seemed taken aback that I was still determined to go ahead, but they grudgingly booked me in for this morning. So today I rummaged around and gathered together passports for us both, utility bills, bank statements, driving licence, letter from the cat’s mother… you name it. Then I turned up at the branch on the dot of the appointed time. The same member of staff took me into an office, asked a few questions, I signed a couple of forms and in ten minutes it was all done. They didn’t even ask for any documents! Honestly I don’t know what all the fuss was about! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2024.

They really didn't want you to make the change with the hassle they gave you and then it only took a few minutes, and you didn't need the documentation you brought with you.

At the start, the staff wanted you to shrink back by telling you so much ! It's nothing but changing an account, where's the harm in that ?

I know, they were really quite hostile! And it was especially funny because it was the person who was most determined to put me off who I had to see for the appointment!

Well, I'm glad it turned out to be easier than you thought but you were smart to book the appointment and not be deterred by the staff. Wonder why they were so reluctant to help.

Obviously they didn't want the bother of doing it! But maybe that's a bit unfair.
