Salmon Ain't All That

United States
March 20, 2024 10:30am CST
This just in: A study found farmed salmon lacks nutrients like calcium, iodine, and omega-3 compared to the wild fish used as feed, like mackerel and anchovies. Experts recommend eating more of those nutrient-rich wild fish for optimal health benefits. So it's the fish that are feeding the salmon we need to eat huh? This dietary back and forth advice never ends, does it? I'd never eat farm raised salmon anyway. I am just gonna eat what I want to eat, thanks.

I gave up trying to understand what's "healthy". I eat what I'm in the mood for, and give George his tube feeds.

@RebeccasFarm I've tried counting calories, paying attention to the nutrition facts, and all the things I hear others' (even on here) say and do. And, all it did was ramp up my anxiety. I have strived to eat more than once a day and staying hydrated. And, that's good enough.

@RebeccasFarm We mostly eat tilapia fish and silver Cyprinid. But salmon, nope. Unless I look for it at the market or supermarket for canned salmon

I wonder if non farm raised salmon is better for you then. I don’t eat fish anyway but I’m curious if the nutrients would be there if salmon were caught in there natural habitats.

There's a good chance, considering the diet of wild salmon is probably drastically different than the farm-raised fish.

I do exactly that: eat what I want to eat. My only limit is that I eat less of what I shouldn´t. Like only one piece of cake and one donut instead of 2.

We watched a cooking show last week that said if you can get wild salmon, do. It has higher omega-3 in them than the farm raised ones. We buy which ever is on sale. Mike loves fish. I like it pretty good, but I am definitely a beef and chicken eater.

We only get wild caught fish . . . yah, it's more expensive, but I try to get them on when on sale. Who knows what they feed them in fish farms (I heard farmed fish are having to swim in their own poop) - so I don't doubt they are less nutritious.

I wonder if the “fish farming” has something to do with that. I’m allergic to seafood so it doesn’t matter, but I’m not really surprised about this report.

I probably can't afford it with this inflation anyway. Unless it's on sale, a big sale! Well, way to bust the bubble of those Bear eating salmon.

I steer clear of farm raised fish. I had some tilapia in a seafood restaurant that literally tasted like mud.

Good to know...I usually make sure I buy wild caught salmon. When my grandpa was alive, we always ate fresh fish that he caught, but it wasn't usually salmon.
